    disadvantages of cats being removed

are there any? I have high flowing cats right now, but am thinking of removing them completely and running straight pipes since I don't have to worry about emissions testing. Does the cel stay on constantly? Will the exhaust be much louder? how about the smell?

Re: disadvantages of cats being removed

Even though i have a 1.8t, i think i can still answer your questions.

If you use 2 anti-foulers between the bungs on the test pipe and the secondary 02 sensors, you might be able to avoid a CEL. That's what i did when i installed my test pipe this past weekend, and so far i've gone about 400 miles and 20 engine starts and the CEL hasn't come on yet. So hopefully it won't come on at all.

As for the smell, it really isn't that offensive. Maybe if somebody had to follow behind you for a long time they'd get annoyed by it, but it really doesn't smell bad. I expected it to smell like that nasty unleaded sulphur smell, but it wound up being a lot like motorcycle exhaust.

And the exhaust is a bit louder, but in a good way. I can hear the turbo spooling loud and clear now and it sounds great. Getting rid of the cat gave me more of an aggressive growl at higher RPMs too.

    Hope that helped.

Re: disadvantages of cats being removed

I gutted my primary cats and my cell light is on. Even if I rest it it comes back within a few minutes of start up. My brother also gutted his but has since got the apr stage 2+ software. All it does above the stage 1 is turn off the cel. The smell is not that bad. I only noticed it at start up or idle ( when outside of the car). Inside the car I have never smelled exhaust.

well if the cel is going to be on constantly...can't I just pull the bulb? Also...I think I know a shop that will remove the cats, but will most shops do it?

Not sure if you could pull the bulb but why would you wany to? There's no way to see if there's another issue with the car. Just get some o2 elimanators. Of course you'll need to have new bungs welded on.

Most shops WILL NOT do it as it is a federal offense.

just remove your down pipes and get them cut at a fabrication shop then get a straight pipe welded in.

Re: disadvantages of cats being removed

I had no cats in my RX7.

What I noticed at least in that car is that I was able to shoot out 1ft fire bursts out the back and it would stain the bumper quicker.

If I do the S4 I think I'll keep high flow main cats on.

Those are the secondary cats. Get or make a set of piggies and you're done. You will probably need some CELiminators...

I already have 3" pipe from the turbos back...so can't I just get those race cats cut off and put a straight pipe in? Also...where can I get my ecu coded for this? I have a GIAC stage 3 tune?

Also...would there even be an increase in performance if I already have race cats?
