New intake w/ heat shield ( w/ pics)

I decided to make a heat shield this past weekend and install the new filter I bought. It was alot easier than I expected. Temps seem much cooler on the intake side as expected, and I can actually hear the bpv now

NO b/c I need a new VAG. I might consider doing a test like that after I get a new CAN version. I really just wanted to make my own, just to do it. The stock box is very easy to reinstall if I want to. I do like hearing the bpv again though.

I wanted to attempt fabricating a heat shield this past weekend but I was unsure what material to use. If you don't mind me asking, What material did you use? Where did you get it? Thanks in advance. By the way it looks great.

How is the "sucking of air sound" of the intake ? Is it obvious from the inside of the car?
When I had the Carbonio intake I hated the sucking noise. I ended up removing it b/c it was too loud for me.

Re: New intake w/ heat shield ( w/ pics)

Is that a K&N filter ? If so, what model is it ?

Looks like it has a moulded boot that just slips over the OEM AFM housing ??

    Neat and easy solution !

Thanks EuroA4, you convinced me to try mine again. My setup looks exactly like yours. I used plain old aluminum covered in heapings of heat reflective adhesive material.

Sucking sound is monstrous. You do hear the bpv as well. I love it all though!

Re: New intake w/ heat shield ( w/ pics)

The sheet metal is .22 gauge aluminum (Lowes) and I had a piece of window molding around that I used for the top seal. The material used for the heat barrier is a peel n' stick aluminized heat barrier for racing applications (Pegasus Racing). And the K&N filter is #RU-3580 which fits directly onto the MAF housing with the included hose clamp.

The sucking of the intake can definately be heard, and does sound good IMO. This is how a turbo car should sound! I think adding a Forge bpv may be in my future!

I have not felt any noticable gains (or loss) from this in terms of power, but I do feel a tiny bit more responsiveness from throttle application.

It was so nice, I went ahead and ordered the filter and also the heat barrier from Pegasus. As soon as it comes in i'm slapping that bad boy on! Thanks for the inspiration, it sure beats paying for a Carbonio or even the Evo Intake. I'll see if I make a little DIY while i'm at it.

Great minds think alike! I did the same setup, I felt a little more umph in the higher RPM's and the turbo finally is heard. I have been planning on replacing the OEM rubber intake tube with a custom steel made one (heat wrapped of course) with the help of a local exhaust fabricator in hopes that it would reduce the resistance caused by the OEM piece. In addition I wanted to take one of those brake duct tubes, or fabricate some type of redirecting shield that would shoot the air straight up from the side duct to the cone filter to give her a little more fresh air.. I plan on doing this tomorrow after installing my FMIC in the morning. Will post some pics once this is done... Just trying to throw on the mods before WF..

I was actually hoping Samco would have a silicone turbo inlet pipe for our cars by now! And I also had the idea for some kind of real cold air pathway from the lower bumper grills using race brake ducting or possibly a custom fender vent like the old MB Sprinter vent or Eurovan vent.

Easy setup. All you need is a k&n filter, aluminum sheet and some heat reflective adhesive. The heat shield is a must, otherwise you will warp your filter! (Speaking from experience).

Installing the K&N resulted in a noticeable throttle response, deeper exhaust note and best of all I can now hear my DV re-circulate the boost from the turbo, no BOV required. The mod cost me: $60-filter, $20-Aluminum sheet and $8-heat reflecting adhesive. EuroA4, Thank you for enlightening me!

If you guys do not want to make it this guy sells em for 80$ shipped, give him my name, Miguel. His website is http://www.blinktekdesign.com/ check it out. Ive had mine for about 6 months with the K&N cone filter and absolutly love it both the sound and performance which i do notice.
