My radio is stuck in 'safe' mode. I've got over 400miles on the new engine since I put the radio back in and its still stuck in 'safe' mode.
From Ross-Tech:
Can I use VAG-COM to retrieve my Radio Code to get it out of "SAFE" mode?
No, You'll need to get the radio code from your dealer (it should also be on a card that came with your car). Most likely, the dealer will need to connect their scan tool to your vehicle. Their tool then relays information from the vehicle to the headquarters to retrieve the radio code. VAG-COM cannot retrieve the radio code for you. In many cases, the radio will be in SAFE mode after disconnecting the battery, but it will automatically exit that mode after a period of time, as long as it is still installed in the same vehicle.

When I bought this Avant I did not receive an owner's manual. The only documentation I received was the entire service history from Audi (from mile 0 ). Therefore, I do not have the radio code that's written in the owner's manual.
Where else can I look in my car for the code? I'd like to have to avoid paying the stealership to recode my radio next week.
I went to the stealership today to inquire about them getting me the code. Turns out I have to drop off my car for the day and shell out $105 (about an hour's worth of labor) for them to spend 5minutes and plug my car into their computer to get the code. I really hope I don't have to drop the car off next week.
1) I called yesterday and all I got was voicemail for the service department. Not the first time this has happened.
2) I stopped by in person today and this is what transpired:
I park out front and walked in. There are around 10 service advisors sitting in their glass cubicles. No one is helping any customers. I'm walking around aimlessly in this new facility. Finally arrive at some big counter with someone behind it. That lady is on the phone (personal call) so she ignores me. Then a technician comes in and asks which car I'm picking up.
myself: "No. I'd like to talk to someone about work on my car."
technician: "Who is your service advisor?"
myself: "I have no idea. I come in here once every few years."
technician: "Jackie, are you going to lunch?"
Jackie: "yes."
technician: "Let me go find Mark."
Jackie: "What can we do for you?"
myself: "I had the radio out of my 2002 A4 for a few months while I was working on other items. Now my radio is stuck in 'safe' mode and I need the key code to unlock it."
Jackie: "It is in your owners manual."
myself: "I understand that. However, I do not have any documentation for my car. All I have are the service records."
Jackie: "Who did you buy it from?"
myself. "Bernardsville VW in New Jersey."
Jackie: "You want to go talk to them."
myself. "They don't have it. I am the second owner."
Jackie: "Contact the original owner."
myself: "That was four years ago. It won't get me anywhere. I have no idea who the original owner is."
Jackie: "Have you been here before? Who is your service advisor?"
myself. "No. I have no idea."
Jackie: "Do you have your VIN number? We can get the code for your radio. It will cost $105 and you'll have to drop off the car."
myself: "Yes. Sure. Lets drop off the car. I believe there are also recalls on the car I need to fulfill."
We go into her glass cubicle. Keep in mind she's a very attractive brunette (my favorite) so I'm trying to be mature and nice about all of this.
Jackie: "You're in the system. Jason is your service advisor. I suggest you talk to him."
myself: "Why? We just agreed to schedule an appointment for me to get this taken care of. If I pull the radio out in the future can I use this key code to unlock the radio?"
Jackie: "Yes, once you have the code you can do it yourself. We can show you how to do it. Do you want me to be your service advisor and schedule this?"
myself. "Sure, it doesn't matter to me. I come in here only when there is something I can not do myself like this radio key code. Whom I speak with isn't that big of a deal as long as we get what I want done accomplished."
Jackie: "This week we're full. How about next week?"
myself. "Sure, next Monday."
Then she gave me her business card with next Monday's date on it and I walked out.
Why the holier-than-thou attitude? I got to the BMW dealership and they sit us down and give us coffee and anything we want.
