Picking up my S4 this week, wanted to know what the book calls for for Octane?

What about if it is chipped?

Can you get away with 89 if your not looking for top boosting?

    Thanks

like 4 bucks a tank more, its nothing. It would be a lot easier to save 4 dollars somewhere else in the duration it takes you to burn a full tank opposed to risking your car's well being.

Only premium, never under 91 octane, don't bitch about 10 cents a gallon more, going cheap will make us laugh at you endlessly for blowing up your engine.

i love how people try to "get away with" buying 89/87 just to save 5 bucks. if i had to pay 5 bucks more/tank to get 93 id be more than happy to pay for it.

Yup, never below 91. When you get ready to chip, there are also octane specific programs you can run.

    91/93 ONLY.

I explained this to my GF the other day because she too wonders why I don't just put the cheap sh*t in my car.

Take a glass of water. Would you drink water that was brown? If you answered yes, than imagine continuously drinking that brown water, over time, its bad for your body because of the crap in that water. Same concept with gas, if your car calls for 91/93, why would you put crap 87/89 gas into it?

you say 91 octane!! seriously in Ca I have only seen 92 once at the pumps..thats IT. never seen 93. so ya.

oh and I found this a couple weeks ago, you should all check it out...

P.S I have never put less than 91. My mom never got why I did it when she had her big SUV. She recently got a Mini S, and she only puts the good stuff. I think it just comes with having the car =).

Not really the right idea. It has nothing to with 91 being "crap" or a different colot. It has to do it with its flashpoint being lower then 93. You could run 91 all day long if you wanted to without getting into boost, and your car wouldnt see a difference. Start getting into boost, and your timing will go off the charts and you will risk detonation.

You guys should really read your owners manual more often. You can run down to 87oct fuel safely, but you will get higher CF's, less timing, and worse gas mileage.

Well..you can also drive a car with your feet if you want to...Doesn't necessarily make it a good idea..

I think anyone who drives spiritedly(boosts) on a regular basis would be foolish to put 87 octane in their car, regardless of what the owners manual reads.

It's true that the great majority of people are grossly under-educated about octane ratings and their significance, but I honestly don't expect people to become a scholar about octane. All I really expect most people to do is to read the friggin owners manual. It tells you what kind of fuel you can safely run. You don't have to invest much time to read that...

BTW, I never said that I would run 87oct, I'm just saying that you can safely do it should you get the urge...

I agree Adam, I live out here in CA and the gas makes me want to go nuts. I'm for sure doing a W/M kit in the next month or so. But let me ask you this. Because W/M helps IAT's so much, what would happen if you ran it with87 or 89 instead of the 91oct? Wouldn't the W/M kit compensate for the lack of octain in 87 or 89?

    Re: Gas Requirements

LOL, true true. I guess I should add that with the higher CF's, less timing, and worse fuel mileage, will also come less power and lower performance.

    Re: Gas Requirements

I would hope that people know by now that less octane = less power in general.

As I said, I would hope!

    Re: Gas Requirements

actually that is very ^ untrue for most cars

most of your cars ecus are not as adaptive as ours.. not even close.. they could care less if you have 87/93 or plain water in the tank lol.

    Re: Gas Requirements

I'd be careful with that statement.
When running on a STOCK tune, yeah, most cars won't benefit at all from higher octane fuel. However, if you know what you're doing with the timing etc, you can get performance gains from almost any car.
