    Hey Guys,

Looking to do an upgrade on my 01 1.8. Anyone know if I can do the S4 brake swap? If not, any other recommendations.

    Thanks

Our Stage 1 A8 kit is a great place to start.

Putting S4 brakes on the front of the A4 is a BIG job, and really not worth what's involved.

I was reading in another forum about an s4 swap to a 1.8 but I believe it was on a b6. So the A8 setup is the King?

the A8 front and rear is the closest bias ratio to the stock B5 A4 setup.

    Re: I Want New Brakes!!

A8 rotors in the front w/TT carriers, Stainless Steel brake lines, good brake fluid such as Motul, and Hawk HPS pads. Best bang for the buck that from what I read can yield better results than Porche upgraded brakes. I did not know about the A8 rotors in the rear too, good to know unorthandoxa4.

You need to have a good ratio of stopping power applied to the rear and front brakes and that set up is supposed to be one of the best. Stock brakes are pretty effecient when maximized to their full potential.

    Re: I Want New Brakes!!

So you just run the stock calipers, upgraded pads, the tt carriers and the A8 rotors front and rear.. Sounds Easy!

    Re: I Want New Brakes!!

If you want more info on the S4/RS4 brake upgrade read the thread I created when I did the conversion also I may have a set of RS4 brakes and disc's for $300 + shipping but note I'm in the UK also mintex pads can be bought for around $70 or less on ebay UK but there would be 9k pads with them and the disc have done only 20k.

Yes, the S4 rears are 255 x 22, the A8 rears are 269x25. That's why you need the S4 calipers because the A4 calipers aren't wide enough to take a 25mm thick rotor

    Re: I Want New Brakes!!

nah....don't go new. Car-part.com and search for everything you need. The only problem I ran into was the A8 Rear Carriers. The S4 Carriers didn't fit so I had to get A8's, when I got them, I had to buy the caliper too....now i have 2 calipers I have no idea what to do with!! All in all I think the conversion for the rears cost me $300CDN

    Re: I Want New Brakes!!

034 and a couple others offer B7 S4 rear upgrade.

I have the A8 fronts currently. I'd like to upgrading to the A8 rears soon, but the MF-er stops pretty damn good now.
If you start swapping calipers and stuff without changing the brake master cyl you can really screw up the brake bias. The bigger your caliper pistons are the more pedal travel you'll have with the same size master cyl. This can actually decrease brake performance.

There's a thread about a month or less back that went into good detail about it.

    Re: I Want New Brakes!!

ya, I was loosely in on that thread. You are correct in that playing with piston sizes and stuff does muck everything up, but going to S4 rear's is not that big of a deal. All it did to me was make the pedal kick in about 1/4-1/3 of the way down and the pedal is softer, but it stops like it's got a boat anchor....haven't kicked on the ABS prematurely yet either!!!

With the 12.3" rotors up front and HPS pads, I can chirp tires at 80 mph when hitting hard on the brake pedal. It stops pretty good.

Wait a minute. It's possible to replace the stock rear rotors with a8 rotors without any other modifications??? I thought they were thicker, thus the reason for needing s4 calipers

    I got my stuff off a 2000 A8.

B5 S4 rear is 256x22 mm vented the a8 rears that go with the 312x25mm fronts are 245x10mm
Yes, this is true, however if you take the size upgrade from stock A4 fronts to A8 fronts and apply the same ratio to the rears you get 265mm. I know there are more factors, but at least it's an increase in proportion. You won't screw much up except for pedal feel.

    Re: I Want New Brakes!!

I don't know if it's been done, or can be, but I'd be tempted to get the A8 Brake master cyl too.

The rears don't need as big of an upgrade as the front. Typically 75-80% or your braking is on the front axle.

Upgrading 288mm to 312mm is only an 8% increase in overall diameter. If the fronts are doing 75% of the work, then the rears (no other changes made) only need to increase 25% of what the increase was to the fronts. Basically only 2% increase over stock. Making 245 x 1.02 ~250mm rotor...
There's lots of other factors in there, but that was my random blip of brainpower.

I don't think that would be necessary if you're running stock front calipers and S4 rear calipers. The hydraulic system has barely changed (only change is the rears which are still 1 pot right?) and the calipers are basically doing the same work as stock. They're just getting more done for that same work.

    Re: I Want New Brakes!!

yeah, could change the master cylinder, I thought about that too....I'm curious as to if it would make much difference though. If it can be easily and cheaply, then it may be worth a shot.

That's a good point I suppose. Both yours and mine make sense. All I know is they look better in 18" wheels and the car stops great!

I didn't know if it had been done or not.

9.6" rotors in 18" wheels can't look real good. The rotor is half the size of the wheel. I know the 12.3" looks great behind my 16" Swings. The wheel weights are ~.125" away from the calipers.

As far as the rear caliper, it's the piston size that I'd be concerned with. Not the number. One piston moving distance X means Y amount of fluid is required. Changing the piston size means more fluid needs to move. In a hydraulic system that would mean that the master cyl would have to move more to compensate. Increase in effort and leverage... kinda.

I don't think it's much different. http://www.autohausaz.com lists the same master cylinder for the A4 and the S4. The S4s have 2 pot fronts don't they? I would think if that master cylinder can handle the S4 front and rear it should have no problem with an A4 front/S4 rear.
