    Coil Pack /

On the way home at 4am this morning I was leaving a rest stop and gave the car a little gas and it just started running like crap and the cel started blinking. I pulled over and checked everything out and all looked normal. The little on board diagnostics thing went through the systems and said "OK". I used my APR Fault Code erase procedure and nothing changed. I was in the middle of nowhere and dead tired so I limped home. The 2 hour drive took me almost 3.5!! One of the coil packs looks as if it might have a minute crack on top. Where can I read up on coilpack issues and problem solving? If it is the culprit do you change all 4 at once? I know in the VW world some ppl super glue and epoxy cracks. I have a B6 1.8t Tiptronic Avant. Thanks in advance!

    Re: Coil Pack /

What is the P/N on your current coil packs (located under the connector on the coil pack).

Do you have VAG-Com to scan the car?

I would try not to glue anything. The electronics inside them tend to fail due to the heat surrounding them.

You could start with replacing that one coil pack and see how things go. I'd just buy 4 new ones and hold onto the 3 used ones as spares. They tend to go quite often in our vehicles. The VW dealership has the latest revision for a fraction of the price of the Audi dealership. I have revision 'R's but I am not sure if they are the latest version.

VW AG 06B9005115J, Bremi 11967ESM. No VAG COM. I did run the APR Fault Erase but it doesn't give any code readings. The onboard computer didn't say anything either. I know the VW guys used to buy the Audi coil packs but you're saying the VW parts are better now, well it is a VW part number. Is this a dealer item only? Thanks man!

    Re: Coil Pack /

Anyone try the Hitachi coil packs that ECS sells as a Stage 1 kit?

Not sure if they are Hitachi but mine are from ECS and they are the "E" version. Good so far(finges crossed).

You have the "J" revision. Last digit in the part number I highlighted in 'bold'. There are newer versions out that are a bit better, like the "R" revision I have. I am not sure if there is a newer version beyond "R". A search in the B6 A4 forum may help answer that question (or a trip to the dealer).

You could buy the OEM ones from the dealer or you can get the Hitachi ones from ECS. Your choice.

I say VW because it is the exact same part (coil pack) in the Audi 1.8Ts and the VW 1.8Ts. I know, for a fact, that my Audi dealership charges $60 a coil pack and my VW dealership charges in the low $30. I bought mine (Revision "R") from the VW dealership back in the fall of 2005 and have had no problems since (even on my new 2.0L stroker).

    Re: Coil Pack /

I did some more research and found what I needed. I'm going with the Hitachi E coil packs with stainless hardware to secure them to the manifold. They are supposed to be pretty good. The Stage 1 kit from ECS Tuning is $124. The regular VW R coils are about $100 for a 4 pack from them. The local dealer wants $130 for 4 oem coils. Thanks for all the info.

Sounds like a good plan. Post up if the new coil packs fix your problems (for completeness sake).

    Re: Coil Pack /

Had issues with ECSTunig! My Avant alone has about 5k worth of stuff on it from them not counting the Getta or Corrado! Anyway got the VW R version coil packs for $94 for the set from the local dealer and put them in. Car runs great so I guess that's that.....

Gonna do the B5 S4 brake upgrade today. Hopefully I can find a hatch wing and door blades soon.
