cars is in alabama getting a new head and a new timing belt. some ass crossthreaded a spark plug before i owned the car, the plug finally gave i guess. pulled the threads out of the aluminum head, so im doing timing belt also.
    $4700

so then I have to use my sisters mini van to continue my trip home to florida. so i get 100 milesfrom home and the van breaks down. a bolt came out of the brake caliper and locked up a wheel. tha was an easy fix but still had to tow it.

needless to say im glad I have AAA.

    Re: I have terrible luck

WTF!!! i would put a thread replacement in there instead of replacing the whole damn head, thats alot of money to spend for a stripped spark plug hole. i would call this shop up and ask what the hell they are doing selling you an entire head job when you can put a thread replacement in there and be all good.

i made the decision for the new head. I want to continue building more power. and i dont want that the become an issue in the future. I looked at the damage wasnt happy with just trying to rethread it. Im keeping the old head. another buddy wants to buy it.

    Re: I have terrible luck

a thread insert if done properly would have been sufficent, just ask any ford mechanic, the v8's and v10's blow spark plugs out like you would not believe and once the thread inserts are in the problem is gone. but its your decision to fix it how you want, and its your money, thats all that matters, if you want it back to 100% original status thats what you gotta do.

    Re: I have terrible luck

i agree, its highway robbery, but its his money and his decision on what to do, if it were my car a thread-sert would have been in it hours ago and on its way home. they do make tools to fix stripped spark plug holes as its more common than you may believe. and the thread inserts are not helicoil but sleeved threaded inserts that are very strong

    Re: I have terrible luck

When my pistons hi-fived my heads it cost me $4,800+tax including parts (rebuilt head too), labour and a TB service at the stealership in Sewickley, PA. What sucked was that they didn't inspect the oil pump as I'd asked (original cause of failure) and I needed a new one by the time I got to Yellowstone...

Sure it's a lot but at least prices are consistent.
