I need to replace my fog light bulbs.
Last time I used whatever the default yellowish ones are but this time I want something brighter. What's a good bright bulb for the factory fogs that won't overheat and melt anything but puts out more light than stock?

If I use the 3000K halogen bulb, will it be too dim?

    Re: Fog bulbs

You would be using an HID kit which is a High Intensity Discharge. The amount of light output set forth by the headlight (or lights in general) has to do with the amount of heat generated from the bulb. The hotter the light, the more sharper it cuts through the darkness. Light is nothing but heat, and when it cools off is when it disperses. 3000k HID is perfect for those looking to upgrade thier fogs.

If it is looks you want, then go with the 4300k. But with that light intensity, it will remove the purpose of the fog lights. The light output would be too great and just reflect off the water molecules in the air (mist in the fog). It would look nice. Just not serve any purpose but that.

Edit: This thread got me now wanting to do this. I think it will be my next mod.

    Re: Fog bulbs

That's cool and thanks for the DIY link for the HID's but all I'm looking for is a stock bulb replacement recommendation.
I don't want to do a HID conversion, at least not right now, I just want to put in a good set of bulbs that will work well and last a long time.
    Thanks for any bulb recommendations.

I think you can simply go to shops like autozone that kind of place and you can get a pair of bulbs which last long. You can also go to ebay which is much more cheaper. But be careful of the input W. I think you must use 50-60W bulbs or else you may get the wires burnt. That's what I heard from others.

    Re: Fog bulbs

I have been runing those bulbs in my highs and fogs for almost 2 years. I have not had any melting problems as of yet, or any signs of future problems.

Granted I only use my fogs when needed, They arn't on all the time.

But I Picked my highs up from a local tuner shop. And I bought the fogs for alot cheaper on eBay.

    Nice!

When I first did my lenses yellow, I used model transparent yellow paint and it made them REALLY nice and deep yellow, but it started to kinda wrinkle. So I got the Lamin-xs and they're not really as deep yellow as I like, I'm kinda bummed, maybe those bulbs would help

Interesting, mine are always on as driving lights unless I turn my headlights on (and don't turn the fogs back on explicitly with the button).

Canada requires DRLs so models sold there were programmed to use the fogs for that purpose. Us in the states can use VAG-Com to program for independant fogs, but they arent that way from the factory.

Just thought I'd update this for someone searching in the future.

I just got these bulbs and the package does say 70w, but I think that may be a light output claim. The bulbs themselves were stamped 55w. Good solid yellow output, good for someone who doesn't want to convert to HID.

    Re: Fog bulbs

If you are getting halogens then skip those painted bulbs and get dichroic ones. The picture below is of dichroic filters which appear clear but change the color of the light without reducing lumen count nearly as much as tinted or painted bulbs.

Heat may be a byproduct of some light but light is not "nothing but heat". Light is photons which have a duality in that they exhibit the properties of both particles and waves. Compare the yellow flame from a Bic lighter to the bright white of a fluorescent bulb.

The Kelvin (color) temp of a bulb has absolutely nothing to do with the heat the bulb puts out. Check this link for information on why light color is referred to as Kelvin temp.

In a nutshell, the standard uses a "black radiator" that is black at 0 Kelvin and changes color as it's temperature is raised. The temp refers to what that "black radiator" would be at that temp.

If you had two halogen bulbs that put out the same color (Kelvin temp) but one was a significantly lower wattage then it would put out significantly less heat even though it was the same color. Temp and color temp are two very different things.

    Fogs have two goals.
    1) Put light where it is needed. Low and wide.
    2) Correct color light. Yellow washes out the blue which is amplified by our brains and causes trouble with night vision and in inclement weather. You want proof? Get yourself a pair of yellow shooter's glasses (dichroic if possible) and wear them at night on a freeway. It will take a little while to get used to all the headlights being pee color but eye strain is reduced and focus is improved. Our eyes pick up blue less than all other colors and our brain amplifies the signal to equalize it. This is why blue leds are so obnoxious compared to red, green, or yellow. Our internal systems get overloaded quickly.
