Check for too much shaft play and also check and make sure the wastegate is in working order and that the fins arent all messed up.

    Mialage?
How much boost he was running?

for the shaft play just wiggle the shaft that has the finns on it and see if it hits the compressor housing anywhere while turning the shaft. and make sure the wastegate flap is not melted and make sure that it makes a good seal when you open and close it. Also make sure the wastegate actuator and shaft are not loose and soft when trying to open the wastegate. thats kind of a rough description on how to do simple checks on the turbo.

    arent you on vwvortex/fortitude ??
