Do I need new lugs for..

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Putting my OZ SL's on tomorrow for waterfest next weekend, can I reuse the stock lugs or are they two small? I believe the wheels are ET 32 or 35, isn't the stock USP ET about the same? Thanks.

Re: Do I need new lugs for..

perhaps someone can help me out since I don't know if these will be long enough. I have stock lugs and then some longer ones. I'm pretty sure the stock ones won't be long enough but maybe the other ones are..? how long do the lugs need to be for the OZ SLs? Here's a pic for comparison:

    Stock on right.

My OZ wheels use a ball seat (not conical). But it's a different radius ball seat than stock wheels. Here is a picture to explain.

Re: Do I need new lugs for..

Check your wheels first, most aftermarket wheels are cone seating and OEM wheels use ball seating lug bolts. Other than that, offset should have nothing to do with you needing longer lug bolts, if you have a spacer then you would need longer lug bolts. Also keep in mind the stock lug bolts are not meant to last forever, you are supposed to replace them after a while and yours definitely look in need of replacement.

27mm is the length of the OEM lug bolts, just in case.

If you don't mind me asking, what wheels came with your car? My USP, my friend's sports package wheels and my boy's B7 all use ball seating which is why I posted that.

Re: Do I need new lugs for..

To the OP, you'll need longer lugs for the OZ wheels (ball seating). The OEM lugs are too short due to the offset.

My OEM USP wheels use ball seat lugs as well, but are short due to the offset (ET43).

I just went through this with my SL's.
ended up using 35mm (thread length) ball seat lugs.
    Wheels are a 32 offset.

I have one set each (ball and cone seat) 30mm lugs left over from my experience if anyone is interested.

it looks like the second set I have will do the trick. is it okay that they are conical and not ball seat, they measure 35mm which is long enough it seems.

Re: Do I need new lugs for..

you shouldn't need new lugs if:

    -you are not using spacers
-the lug seat matches the current wheel

common misconception is that offset somehow affects lug size. offset usually refers to spoke design

You missed the fact that not all wheels are the same thickness which is why the OZ's need a longer lug.

Re: Do I need new lugs for..

The stock lugs have 27mm of thread and they protrude 20mm out from the back of the wheel. You need to find lug bolts in the correct configuration (ball or cone, depending upon the wheel seat type) that will give you a minimum of 20mm penetration into the hub. Just stick the lug bolt into the wheel and measure how much it sticks out from the back of the wheel. If it is at least 20mm you are good to go. If it is more than 20mm it will still work as long as it isn't long enough to contact the hub carrier. If it is more than 25mm of penetration just mount the wheel and give it a spin by hand to make sure that there is no interference.

    Cheers!

It's fine if you want to irreversible damage the mounting holes of your wheels.

Conical seat bolts on a wheel that uses ball seat bolts is only asking for trouble. Lugs won't seat properly, and thus won't hold torque correctly.

As mentioned earlier, OZ wheels use an R12 ball seat 36mm length bolt.
ALL factory Audi wheels use an R13 ball seat 28mm length bolt. If your car came with something other, you have the wrong bolts.

Well I installed the second set of lug bolts I had and they worked fine. I will be purchasing the correct lug bolts relatively soon, should I buy them straight from OZ or what? these will work fine until after waterfest..

Switch to studs. Mike can sell you the OZ nuts. I believe he sells the lug bolts also, if you go that way.

On what wheels? I think that is pushing it on a set of OZ's which already need longer bolts, but maybe it would work on a wheel that can use shorter bolts without spacers.

    12mm longer than stock (27mm) so, 39~40mm.
