    test pipe woes

ok, i recently upgraded with a ATP test pipe to my stock exhaust. ATP'S website even says (before everyone trips out) that it can be mounted to stock exhaust. it is awesome and i love the sound, and the quick spooling. however, the gasket between the test pipe and the down pipe keeps giving out and giving me an annoying exhaust leak at boost. my mechanic (who is an audi master guild tech says it is because the boost is too great going from a 3" to a 2" and blowing it out, but the ATP engineer says that that is definately not the problem and that i am missing a exhaust bracket that supports the exhaust at this point and i need to reinstall it.

anyone here had this issue before?

    thanks in advance!

I have the exact same problem, and to my knowledge I'm not missing any brackets, as I changed the TP myself. I was wondering if some high-temp silicone on the gasket would help. Let me know if you find anything out.

    Re: test pipe woes

The problem is most likely the fact that your mounting a flange with a 3" opening to a flange with a 2" opening, so you have this huge lip that the exhaust is running right into. I haven't heard of any running the ER 3" to 2.5" test pipe with this problem.

    Re: test pipe woes

I would agree with Mike above. I have no problems with my 3->2.5. I always assumed the ATP pipe was for ppl who wanted a custom 3" turbo-back since even most aftermarket systems are 2.5" downpipes.

    Re: test pipe woes

this is the ad...the 1.8t's exhaust is 2" right?

Fits 1997 - 2001 Audi A4/Vw Passat with K03, K04, or ATP Elminiator Series Turbos 3" racing downpipe deletes restictive cat immiediately after the turbo on the longitudinally mounted 1.8T. There is no welding or cutting necessary. The downpipe has a large 3" opening to take full advantage of the turbo flow and has provisions for the factory oxygen sensors. Typical gain is 200 to 400 rpm sooner spoolup and 40 ft/lb of wheel torque. HP gain is 10-15 on stock and K04 turbo and 30-40 on GT28RS or larger turbo. Our favorite when used with stock exhaust for ultra quite stealth sound. This part is for offroad use only.

    Re: test pipe woes

Yes the stock exhaust should be right around 2" IIRC. When you go to pull it out to change the gasket you might want to measure the gasket opening and the openings for the TP and DP. It could be that the gasket opening is smaller then the TP flange which means it is getting hit by direct exhaust flow.

I have a ER tp coupled with an AWE exhaust. Ever since I installed it I hear alot more of the turbo hissing sound/possible leak when I start moving. Could this be a normal sound that is being confused as a leak????

    Re: test pipe woes

You can have a custom exhaust made.. you know, to your specifications at an exhaust shop. If you find a good shop, their quality and sound will be just as good as a $1000 system but for around half the price.

Yeah custom piping. It may not look that fency from the underneath the car, but will have basically the same performance/sound.
The most common mufflers are 14851's from Magnaflow, search on youtube for the sound.
