    The AVANT is ALIVE!!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Got the intercooler. Fired her up today.

Started right up and sounds bad-ass.

The lifters were super noisy even after I primed the head with oil. I took it for a very easy drive 2blocks up the street for gas (I was beyond empty). Had her running while I filled up and the lifters were super quiet and back to normal.

    No codes

    No CEL

My airbag light is on because I took my seat out. gotta figure out why.

This car sounds so fucking awesome and pulls hard at 11psi (the WG).

The 2.8 trans is LONG. I'm having to do my 2000-5000-2000rpm pulls in 2nd gear because I'm hitting 60mph in 2nd gear. The JHM shifter rules all!

15miles on the new engine. stopped home to check the oil and get a drink and inform you, my friends!

Got some shitty camera videos I'll post later. My roomate and I are heading back out for another 15miles.

    Logs look good.

Thermostat housing is not leaking so my rigg/fix worked!

    I'm so stoked!

    congrats!

don't you think if you only clear the codes the airbag light will turn off? or maybe it will take some time for the ECU to realize the seat is back on or something.

    Re: The AVANT is ALIVE!!!

30miles are up. We passed 4 or 5 cops but no one bothered us. I had two jackasses behind me that were clueless (I'm going from 20mph-60mph-20mph). I found it very humorous and confusing (couldn't believe how many people were on the road for 11pm).

Working on the videos. We'll see if youtube accepts them in a reasonable timeframe. I'm exhausted and need sleep. Got up at 6 again today.

    Tomorrow:
    change oil
    compression check
check over all the bolts I can get to to verify everything is tight
    double-check trans fluid
try and clear the airbag code from the airbag controller rather than from a full auto-scan
    review my logs
probably pull some timing via lemmiwinks. The CFs looked normal from what I recall my tune being but I want them a tad lower for the initial 1000miles on this motor.
email BobQ and Mark & Frank @ ASP for a quick status
go driving and do more logging. actually shift into 3rd gear for once

It is so nice to be driving my Audi again.

I notice it at low speed turns. Like a U-Turn in the middle of the road. It 'almost' feels like if I left the 4WD engaged in my Jeep. The front tires make a slight chirping sound. The car definitely plants itself more in the rear [now] on a straight run (all I was doing tonight).

    Re: The AVANT is ALIVE!!!

    uploading as I type this.

I have to go to the dealer for the firewall recall and have them fix my radio so I'll have them fix the airbag if I can't figure it out. I also have to fix that damn driver fog light. The dog encounter months ago broke it.

Codes (new codes are in bold, the rest I've had for many months):

You know what? I never included airbags in my full auto-scan. That is why the light was never cleared. I'll clear it through the actual controller tomorrow.

You've gotta solder in a resistor... you didn't think it would be that easy, did you?

Victor, from the sounds on the phone that thing is a beast. Good work man.

The gears in the trans are definitely long. I knew this when I bought it (and still have my 1.8 trans in the event I want shorter gears). My friend, whom owns a 2.8 B5, said 1st gear chatters a lot. I haven't driven it enough in 1st gear to notice. It feels smooth shifting gears (shifter & gear oil is helping that). I have yet to take it out of 2nd gear so give me 'till the end of the weekend to provide a better report.

You're getting into any boost with only 30 miles on the car??? You should at least wait 100 miles before you go over a few psi!

Well I must admit I've been waiting (and waiting) for this post, and am duly impressed. I'll be keeping tabs on it for sure.

Very nice work, from the photos in your build thread and now some first sounds this thing is going to be MEAN!

Congratulations, of the highest order! You've been patient for quite a while, it must be an exciting time for you right now.

If you have the time, care to have your roommate film some idling shots of the car with the hood up so we can see/hear it that way too?

Very nice work, from the photos in your build thread and now some first sounds this thing is going to be MEAN!

Congratulations, of the highest order! You've been patient for quite a while, it must be an exciting time for you right now.

If you have the time, care to have your roommate film some idling shots of the car with the hood up so we can see/hear it that way too?
Thank You very much. This is a huge relief for me seeing as my deadline to get it running was this coming weekend. Why? I have a ton of mountain bike races starting next weekend through the end of August. Lots of traveling. I wanted to drive the Avant (when I am driving to these races) because 1) its more comfortable and 2) gets so much better gas mileage than my Jeep. Now I've accomplished that and can relax a bit and start thinking of other stuff (like a TIP heatshield, oil catch can system, etc...).

I'll get some idling videos today and am trying to get my friend's video camera for better quality. Eventually I'll get someone to follow me so you guys can see some rolling video shots from outside the Avant looking in .

I want to thank the following individuals for helping me with this project:
Mark & Frank @ AutoSpeed Performance
    Bob @ QED Power
    Issam (issam@034)
    Jake (317ssayzarc)
Clint (audia4_20T) & Dave (skeeball) for rummaging through junk yards for me
    Jordan (co avant)
    John (condo)
    Blake (102487thedude)
    Chris (dirtybrd)
    Shawn (a4ringedone8t)
    John (diagnosticator)
Filipp'e (XcartelX) for his obsession with my AZ profile
    Colin (XonetruthcrewX) for his shit
    DTH & JHM
    Al @ NorthEastCoatings
my friend Mike for his engine hoist
my friend Eric for his knowledge and car lift

and any one else that I can't remember. Thanks! This isn't the end; the fun is just beginning

    Re: The AVANT is ALIVE!!!

You need to do a calibration with vag com for the steering angle sensor G85. Very easy to do, just go to the Ross-tech website to find the procedure for it.

Glad you got it up and running buddy. I was lol when you called about the lifter noise, I would be scared too, but after 2 builds I knew it just needed more oil to build pressure. I bet you are on top of the world right now. Feels good to complete a big project like this. Don't you love the sound of the engine now? I get complements all the time saying how good it sounds. Much deeper tone. When you drain your oil check to see if you see any micro metal shavings...

I was definitely freaking out about the lifters but once I thought about it everything made sense.. Hydraulic lifters need oil and I just needed to get the oil to fill them up.

I'm so happy I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to sleep last night but I did, out of exhaustion. The engine sounds so good. That exhaust has a perfect tone.

Congratulations man! I can't wait for the rolling vids, the idle vids or any vids for that matter! You should make a sticky about your build since everything was done so professionally with so much attention to detail and with nothing left out. All you BT and BAT B6er's need to make a cool vid at Waterfest!

I won't be attending Waterfest. I committed to a mountain bike race in Pennsylvania that same weekend (I set mtb race schedule up in Dec/Jan and didn't even think about WaterFest then).
