I have new rims and need to purchase some Lock Bolts. What size do i need for an 8.5 in wide rim with a 35mm offset? how is the bolt measured? thread to thread or thread to head?

    Re: Lug Bolt Sizes

The wheel width and offset have zero to do with lug length. If you run spacers, then you need to use longer lug bolts.

depends on the wheel, you'll need to check and see if it uses ball seat or cone seat bolts and you want 6-7 full turns of thread engagement in the hub. Length is measured on the threaded portion only.

    Re: Lug Bolt Sizes

You need to know if your new wheels have conical or ball seats. Generally, aftermarket wheels are conical so you can't use stock lug bolts which are ball seat. So, they don't need to be longer, but they need to match the seat in the wheel.

Quick Q: "want" 6-7 full turns? or is this mandatory? Neither of my current cars (B5 A4 and 05 VW GLI) get 6-7 turns... and the VW bolts are OEM.

I need to buy new bolts for my Audi and have always thought they were too short (a little more than 4 turns, 5 max), is there a method for determining the length? I guess using some thin device to measure the depth of the wheel plus hub...

I would really love to go to a stud kit, which I have an even harder time figuring out sizing of....

    Re: Lug Bolt Sizes

If you're doing some stressful driving, get as many as gets full engagement (6-7) w/o going THROUGH the hub into something (like a rotor) behind it.
