    Axle gone bad???

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've been having a lot of vibration lately and I've done it all.. Balancing of the rims, alignment, Hub rings, then I noticed my axle (passenger front) has some in and out play ie.(towards the motor and then to the hub). How much play should there be??? Is it shot?

    Re: Axle gone bad???

It is normal to have some movement. If the axle was bad, it would vibrate mostly under acceleration. Did you check the wheels for bends? How are the bushing in the control arms? And I don't rememeber, is the tread on the inside of the frt. tires smooth or do the have some chop?

    Re: Axle gone bad???

im about to check the wheels for bends now, the bushing looks fine on the lower control arm and yes.. my tires are kinda smooth on the inner walls ( i know I need tires soon..lol)

p.s. i've been chatting with old guy via pm's about some other possible causes...i'll keep this updated.

Check your boots on the axles if there broken all the grease got out and is making the axle vibrate. It happened to me and had to rebuilt both front axles

    Re: Axle gone bad???

I had a bad axle a couple of months ago.

Everyone, especially mechanics were telling me it was my tranny, or mounts or balancing etc..i have a cvt and it is having the normal cvt problems but it does not cause vibrations.

I finally took it to novitech tuning down here in miami and we agreed it wasnt the tranny.

Bad axle. The right had a slight tear.

Symptoms: Vibration during accelartation, goes away when you let off the gas. will get progressively worse.

Go with OEM axle, tried aftermarket and it did not fix the issue.

I am glad i was stubborn about it and would not take the tranny answer as the problem. I think its sad that my know nothing about cars ass could figure out the problem and experienced mechanics had no clue.

    novitech tuning ftw!

You know more about your car than you think.

    Re: Axle gone bad???

Hey I looked for tears but found nothing... I'll double check since I didnt look very hard for minimal tears. I got new tires and still a lil vibration like you said on acceleration and none when off the gas. Im kinda accustomed to it now..lol!

dirty is right on the money. I've got the same issue with mine. Just looking at it you really can't tell. A closer look or just using ur hand will reveal a torn inner boot.

But you don't have to have a torn boot to have a bad inner joint.

Check to see if any of the factory weights have fallen off the main driveshaft. If your driveshaft is out of balance you are prone to get vibrations during an interval of speed (ie: 40-60mph)

    Re: Axle gone bad???

i had the exact same thing happen to me. The play in the axle is normal, had the vibration when i hit the gas, but i noticed my cv boot was ripped, i think audi wanted like 600 for a axle, i had to get one from a wreckers out west for like 300 bucks.
