    Question B6 Headlights

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Are the HID and non-HID projector lights the same housings?
I was wanting to buy the OEM ballasts, harnesses and bulbs from Akinaboy on Ebay and was wanting to make sure I didn't have to replace the headlight housings also.
    Thanks for you help,
    Brian

    Re: B6 Headlights

If you buy an H7 lamps HID kit, you could use the original halogen housing headlights.

No. HID and halogen projectors have slightly different optics.

    Re: B6 Headlights

Now I'm thinking of doing an H7 conversion on my B6. Do the optics of the halogen housing screw up the HID bulb? or is the H7 kind of specifically made for the halogen housing? I just want to be sure this will be ok and that I can still see

It was answered in B6 forum numerous times.
Retrofitted halogen housing with xenon kits will output incorrect beam pattern, if Canada inspects headlights then it will fail the test. There is no way to have proper beam utilizing halogen projectors. You must get OEM Xenon housing to have it done properly. I spend $500 for complete used set, and I'm happy about it. Also I'm not the asshole blinding oncoming traffic.

    Re: B6 Headlights

The headlight housings are the same, but the projectors fitted inside are different. Halogen housings can be converted to Xenon by swapping the projectors, installing
OE xenon projectors, mounting the ballast, (a hole will need to be cut out under the ballast mounting for the wires,) and converting the H7 power wires to supply power to the ballast instead. Akinaboy can sell you a kit having all of the items needed to convert. Swapping out the projectors, requires a couple of tricks, It's not hard, but it's not easy to explain in a post. If you go with this, PM me and I can explain the projector swap.

    Re: B6 Headlights

I did a complete swap with the Grand Cherokee I just traded in for the A4. I took some crappy eBay projectors and placed in some Infiniti FX45 projectors. The final product was pretty decent but there are a few things I would have done differently.

    Can be seen here: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2688562

However, we have had the B6 now for two weeks and to be honest, I am a little intimidated with trying to even remove the headlamps to adjust the drivers side bulb.

The left side has a clear cut off in the beam pattern but the drivers side, not so much. In my experience, this was caused by the bulb not being set properly. Looking at the screwdriver needed, I am thinking a T40?

The wife and I are used to xenons and want to make the conversion. Some dude on eBay claims to have an HID kit made exclusively for the B6 A4's and claim to not need E-code projectors to pull it off. The cost is around $300 and some change. Otherwise, you could spend $100 on a kit with bad ballasts and cheap bulbs. Been there, done that, wont go back.

However, I wish I could find a used set of OEM Xenon housings/bulbs for our A4, but vendors on eBay want $250-$350 for just one side, or the other without bulbs or ballasts. Another vendor has the bulbs and ballast but no housings for $200.

I guess for now, I'll just have to settle for adjusting my halogens and living with them, possibly upgrading the bulb to a better quality halogen. There are some good halogen projectors in todays cars.

Okay guys, this was my first post so sorry its long but I have another related question.

Can I get my fog lights to come on with my parking lights? I seem to only be able to get the fogs on, with the regular headlamps.

    Re: B6 Headlights

I would recommend buying used OEM. I paid $500 for a pair of housings with bulbs and ballasts, and works flawlessly.
I think user: akinaboy (http://hidconcept.com/Kits-valeo.html) has all parts for retrofitting, but I would just look into classifieds.

Regarding fog lights, what M.Y. is your car. MY 2002 can be VAG-COMed, if later, you need to splice some wires. Easy job.

    Re: B6 Headlights

T30 Torx for the headlights, and the bottom rear screws are only loosened, not removed all the way.

If you are patient, a pair of used OEM xenon housings with lamps and ballasts included can be obtained at a reasonable cost. It's the easiest way to properly upgrade to HID lighting. There are other ways to do it, also. It's possible to get a kit with the OE ballasts lamps and ballast>D1S lamp cables, and HID xenon projectors to swap into Halogen housings, but the projectors are a little tricky to swap out, and the housing needs to be cut out where the ballast mounts to pass the wiring through. In this setup, the wiring that powers the H7 bulb, is adapted to connect to power the ballast instead.

    PM sent.

    Look at that: http://www.audizine.com/classifieds/...uct=337&cat=35
    Add that: http://hidconcept.com/Kits-valeo.html
And you've got yourself a kit for $500. OEM.
