if you drove it that long without oil pressure you have much bigger problems than a pump lol...

Well, he must have some oil pressure. There is no way a car would last even a mile with ZERO oil pressure.

I would say the oil pressure sensor (the one right at the bottom of the oil pan) is malfunctioning.

Re: Is Changing Oil Pump Hard To Do

The oil light came on about 30 miles out of atlanta, Ga. When we hit traffic in downtown atlanta the car turned completely off. We had checked the oil which was topped off and the owners manual said that it could be a issue with the oil pressure. In low RPM's low oil pressure and a rattling noise but in high RPM's the light goes out. Once we had it towed, we took it off the trailer and drove it around the neighborhood and everything was okay. On the way back to the house just a few miles, the oil light (flashing red) came on again, however I will check the oil pressure sensor. Will give update as soon as I can. Thank you,

That is the oil level sensor. Mine died around 70k.

Oil pressure sensor is in the oil filter flange.

Re: Is Changing Oil Pump Hard To Do

To answer the original question "Is changing the oil pump hard to do?"

The front subframe needs to be dropped in order to drop the oil pan.

Once the oil pan is off you can get to the oil pump. It is in the front of the block. there is a tensioner that needs to be removed. Once that is removed you can get the chain off the pump. Then pull the pump off. I do not recall if the front main seal needs to come off (if you are not replacing the chain).

Typically, if sludge is a concern, all you need to do is unbolt the oil pump pick-up and clean that out as well as the oil pan. The pump pick-up usually collects with grit and that is what causes 'sludge' which also inhibits proper oil flow into the pump and thus throughout the rest of the engine. I've never heard of an oil pump going bad on these 1.8T engines.

Re: Is Changing Oil Pump Hard To Do

I have actually heard of many oil pumps taking a dump on the B6 1.8T up here at audi, but it was most likely cause the oil pickup tube was clogged to the point where no oil would pass through from sludge.

Oil pump itself (they do go bad internally) or the oil pressure sensor. If you need help getting either let me know!
