OEM sport shocks, and aftermarket springs

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i know this has been discussed alot. but i havnt really seen much of a desicive(sp?) answer on this.. maybe because there isnt one..

but is anyone running the OEM sport shocks, and aftermarket lowering springs?? are the sport shocks able to handle lower springs for the long run? like do you think i could run oem sport shocks and a conservative spring like eibach and be fine for few years??

basically i have stock suspension. i am about to get an oem sport suspension installed. i plan down the line when i have money to buy some new wheels, then at that time i will buy springs and pay for another installation..

now i am considering just putting the springs on now (and saving the cost of having to pay twice for installation). but what i DONT want to happen, is to lower my car now, and then get new wheels in a year or so, then by the time that happens my shocks are blown and im pissy

im looking for answers, not necessaily opinions, and im not looking for advice as to whether i should buy coilovers or not.. i just really want to know if the sport shocks can handle lower springs.. does anyone have any first hand info??

Re: OEM sport shocks, and aftermarket springs

just installed my h&r sport springs and didn't bother with aftermarket shocks (i.e. koni).

im very happy with the ride height and its not too bouncy. after i got the springs installed i went and got an alignment at the dealership.

here's the thing: i leased my car. the service guy at the dealership said that since it's a leased car that i shouldn't bother with the shocks and just switch out the springs when i turn it in. however, if i keep the car after the lease is up (2.5 years) i'm gonna have to get new shocks.

my guess is that the oem sport shocks will last 20k-25k with sport springs. also remember to get your wheels rotated and aligned every 5k or you'll wear out expensive tires real fast.

Re: OEM sport shocks, and aftermarket springs

They handle better than the stock shocks on none sport, but just the same, they will wear out after than a spring and strut combo!

Most people who get CO's don't change up their suspension after they get it to the "right" setting for their driving style. I have the Stasis CO's and i love them to death, but yet if there was a cup kit of some sort I would buy that and save money.

If you plan on getting new wheels or raising or lowering your current setup the CO's will be best. I got a great deal on the CO's so i bought them for the same priceas springs and struts cost...

Re: OEM sport shocks, and aftermarket springs

hmm... i appreciate the info.. that 20k-25k mile range of how long the sport shocks will last was pretty much what i was looking to know

what exactly does the car being lower have to do with the tires wearing out faster??

my car isnt leased, but at the same time i usually only own the car for 2-3 years..so im thinking maybe just springs, then ill throw on the stock sport springs right before i sell

with oem sport shocks, H&R sport or Eibach Pro-kit should be ok. Keep in mind labor is not cheap and whether its shock/spring combo, coilover, or springs only labor will be the same. All installs require virtually the same procedures and time. Also you can resell a spring and shock or CO and recoup some of that money back.

Re: OEM sport shocks, and aftermarket springs

even mild springs like Eibachs or H&Rs causes the shock valve to sit lower in the shock tube than designed. limiting its effectiveness and ultimately wearing it out faster than normal. If you plan to keep your car a while, and don't want the ride degrading a lot over time, pony up for better matching shocks. Or get coilovers...they're only a few hundred more than a spring/shock combo, and not only offer adjustability but handle quite a bit better. If your car is new and a lease, you can likely get by with springs and oem sport shocks, but don't be suprised if as time goes on you notice the car becoming bouncy.

I don't know exactly how lowering has an effect on the wheel wear...

It has something to do with the wheels very slighty go in a different direction???

    Someone else chime in....

The rice bounce is annoying to look at and experience. Do it right the first time since the install labor will be the same and sell them when you return the car.

I have H&R springs with the sport shocks and while I wouldn't say I necessarily regret not replacing the shocks, as they weren't (and still aren't) in my budget, I will definitely save up and do it right on my next car.

tires wear faster because angle of the toe(IIRC) unless you want to buy a $300ish toe kit

even if you get the car aligned after installation?

Toe? I think you mean camber.

The lower the car sits, the more negative camber the alignment will experience causing the inner part of the tire to wear faster than the outer part.

yep, sorry camber! the alignment won't help the tire wear!
