car back from the shop, and speedo still not working...help me pls

I had a problem where my speedo wasnt working so i took it into the shop and they checked the car out. they tested all electrical with their scan tool and the gauge cluster works fine. They checked the speed sensor and they said it was chewed up and was ruined. So they thought they found the problem. well, they replaced the sensor and the speedo is still not working. The shop says that it is something in the transmission where the sensor goes into that is causing the problem and the tranny might need to be rebuilt. however, this doesnt make any sense to me since my car doesnt have any gear grinding issues and its not difficult to put it not any gears. Maybe its just the housing the sensor goes into that is faulty......any thoughts on this or any ideas what it could be. im really frustrated right now so please help me

they say they can hear a sound in the transmission which caused the sensor to get chewed up but i dant hear anything at all and i know every sound my car makes....i just want to know what the damn problem is

Where are you located at? I have a VAGCOM we can use to test this stuff out... I am in Olympia... I'd be willing to help out sometime! Did they do an output test of the cluster? Did the log the signal comming from the sensor? If the sensor is chewed up, it may be possible that something internal is messed up... Those just don't chew themselves up...

gear on the side of the front diff is what drives the speed sensor. it is possible it is damaged somehow. happens to mk3 vw's. i remember having sold the parts several times when i was at vw.
    contact via email please.

Just checked the bently for you... If the drive gear is damaged, it looks to be FAIRLY simple to replace... Just have to remove the drivers side axle from the tranny, pull the axle flange out and a seal and the drive gear pops out with a screw driver... Install reverse of removal... Would probably need to get some more gear oil also... I would recommend OEM stuff... I tried Royal Poophole and it didn't work out so great...

im assuming it is something internal that is chewing up the sensor. im located in bonney lake and have a vagcom myself. the shop tested out everything and said it was ok, but something is chewing up the sensor is all. said it was something in the tranny.

btw, you got a page # in the bentley manual or where i can look under? i cant find it in there. if ill order the part ill let you know.

It doesn't appear to be that difficult... I haven't done it but you will need a couple special tools... I should have everything except the tool to pull the axle to transmission part...
