How long do the 2.8 A6's usually last if they are maintained properly? Are there any problems I should look out for? The one I'm looking at is a 1999 A6 2.8Q avant with 117,000 miles and he is selling it for $4,950. He said the A/C needs repair and there is a small paint chip on the rear bumper. Also what kind of gas mileage do these get?

    Re: 1999 A6 2.8 mileage

i have 180,000k on mine, theres a guy on audiforums with 311k

i was getting 15mpg for the longest time but recently have been getting closer to 18-19 with mixed city/highway driving

things to lookout for is the suspension components (shocks/struts, control arms especially, and tie rods as well) ~ see what maintenance has been done (timing belt should have been done within the last 30k hopefully) also see that the appropriate timing belt accessories were also changed (serp. belt, tensioner, rollers, thermostat etc) ~ might also be a good time to change the vac lines, fuel filter, o2 sensors, and coolant temp sensor (surely those last ones will come in within the next year or so)

*note, at my mileage I have replaced all of the above, plus:
engine mounts, trans mounts, drive shaft cv boot, front axles, alternator, fuel pump
(some drive train items listed could be attributed to my spirited driving habits and aggressive suspension)

    hope that helped!

    Re: 1999 A6 2.8 mileage

I really don't know... never done a compression or leak down test... maybe maf related but i'm guessing the majority of it is my driving habit... i noticed if i REALLY tried that I could get 18 but that was no fun

and honestly i don't know how the fuel economy just jumped up recently, but i do feel a loss of power as well, i'm really thinking it's maf related but no VAG to log anything...
(only thing different was new spark plugs, but i changed them 1-2 weeks prior to this mentioned gain in mpg)
