Who has a "BT" and still has it running?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm getting prepared for a gt2871r. Ecode says they can run off stock internals. It seems that many people have are having engines go out, so how can that be? I'm curious if anyone has a BT for over 25k miles?

I mean its seriously looking grim on the forums now, I was so excited before.

I'm guessing its build the block or go home?

Re: Who has a "BT" and still has it running?

Ive been pushing the hell out of my car and maxing out each setup (3 turbo's now) for 30k+ miles. Luck of the draw I got a faulty bearing that trashed my crank and rod on cyl #3, other than that would still have been going strong. We are pushing 2-3 times the stock HP and trying to squeeze every HP possible from our setups, something is bound to break sometime. This just came up in another thread this morning but if your not happy with the "bolt on" 250-270whp 99% of the BT's give you, be prepared to fix something when it breaks!!!

I am reallllly interested in BT info as well.
Is there much low end loss compared to say a APR1+ setup?? Or is it comparable at low end and a monster top end to boot??
I think my 1+ is pretty drivable except for the initial 1st gear spike around 3500... 2nd, 3rd, and on feel pretty good
Just wondering how it will feel with a BT kit

Re: Who has a "BT" and still has it running?

    ^you should...

there's practically no loss of low-end that you'll notice.. atleast none that you'll worry about once you're in the top end. especially if you get on it right out of the gate (1st and 2nd) you won't see hardly any lag.

if you roll into it from a low rpm in a higher gear - you'll get lag just like you used to... but then when boost hits..

well, lets just say that if this is your first "powerful" or "fast" car.. you'll need a pack of cigarettes, change of pants, and possibly a towel after the first time you drive it.. I've driven cars twice as fast as my a4 (and ridden in ones that literally made 1000whp more) and i still couldn't get the fucking grin off my face after my car was done.

I disagree. The loss of torque between 2800 and 3900 or so is very noticable. A chipped K03 has maximum torque through that range, and a 28 series is only spooling up there. Agreed, once you're at 4K, forget the K03

I kind of wonder this myself, except I have a tiptronic. I know a few people are running the GTRS with a tip, but since there is less control over when the car shifts, would it still be considered drivable (more so on the low end)?

i've never had a problem with it... lag is something you create when you're too lazy to shift. as greg once said "you just have to know your car and be able to row gears like a slave on a viking ship" (or something to that effect)

also, i've got plenty of torque in that same range.. a chipped k03 is MAXING in that range.. a BT a4 (especially a smaller eliminator like a GTRS) will be into 15-18psi by then, and that's more power than a k03 spiking 23psi would make in the same RPM range. having that open top end is totally worth any "lag" that you might experience..

personally i don't think anything outside of small displacement cars running a 4088 or larger can really be called lag. a 35r would have some decent lag on it too... but again.. your top end would kill it so hard that you'd never really have to worry about it.

and to the comments about "driveability" -- you have to remember that NOT having a sudden and totally un-stoppable onset of boost in lower RPM's actually makes your car easier to drive "normally" if you're trying to save gas or just get around town. then you can downshift and really open it up. it makes it much easier for me to control how i want the car to drive IMO.

I don't have any time to waste, Waterfest is coming up fast. I've was driving all weekend and I should have another 500 miles by the end of the week.

Good luck on getting your build done. From what you wrote in your thread you should be fine. I want to see how the IC turns out.

I dont feel the 35r is laggy at all. Yes it doesn't hit hard till 4600 rpms but it isn't like I am making less tq at 3k then a stock K03.

BTW the numbers on the graph are about 10% then what the car really makes since that pull was done on a very low reading dyno, even talked to a few evo guys that have also been on that dyno vs a normal reading dynojet and they say I should be around 630-640 on the dynojet.

Re: Who has a "BT" and still has it running?

we also have to keep in mind here there are differences between internals on b5 and b6...the engine internals were for the most part degraded throughout the generations of engine codes on the 1.8t. the b6 was the end of the line...weakest rods and pistons, most restricitve head design, etc. I dont honestly feel that "relying" on stock internals on a BT setup is the mental position that one should take. I for one KNOW that a k04 can blow a motor when maxed out....because I did it! HP is not the problem here, it is torque and how it sets in...it only takes 1/10 of 1 sec at a peak to snap a rod....the BT setups do onset more slowly (which is good) tq-wise....but at the peaks we are seeing on some setups that we know are pushing the envelope I dont understand why people are wondering how motors are giving in...when you are pushing the limits...the motor is only as strong as its weakest link...that could be a slightly weaker cast rod than the other 3, a weak point in a cast piston, a bearing, etc etc etc. I am not implying stock internals arent good...because relative to most makes and models of cars they really are VERY robust given the stock HP of the platform...but lets be honest here....we cant wonder why things are grenading when stock internals were regularly de-engineered through the years for a motor that at the end of the day was designed for 170hp/tq. While the original 1.8t design was quite a bit more robust...this is simply not the case on the AMB motor.

Hey Ted, how are things coming along? Well written statement! Hope you're seeing the end. I want to hear about your car when you're ready to share.

things are coming along nicely. we had to move to a larger facility, which has taken up quite a bit of time. Most things are in place, the mock-up is in process. shouldnt be toooooo long now!

Good to hear! Looking forward to the outcome.

My car is back together. Jordan shipped me back my FMIC yesterday so I should be turning the key later this week.

Can anyone give me more feedback on the 2.3inch neuspeed exhaust for a gt2871r please. Is it too small?

Re: Who has a "BT" and still has it running?

Great question: I'm a noob with a B6 1.8tqm that is bone stock. My hotrod is a 600+rwhp Whipple Cobra and the Audi is my daily driver. On the Cobra OEM driveability and good fuel economy are possible despite running 60lb/hr injectors. I had lots of other sacrifices like loud exhaust and an expensive clutch ($1800) to hold the power but it works. I will not go to those extremes (and can't given I have to drive this car with customers) so it can't be loud and can't have a chattery clutch and it can't smell like arse with no cat. Given what I'm looking for, is a BT still a smart move for me? I'd love 275whp. I never want 100octane special file overperform track day whatever.. thats for the Mustang. Can I get this car to a reliable and (relatively) quiet and daily driveable 275whp and if so what setup should I go with? I've read enough threads with guys omitting MAFs and substituing MAFs and using smaller or bigger injectors than their files are designed for.. all kinda scary and leads me to believe this is not licked yet from a tuner/ECU perspective, am I wrong? CEL's are not acceptable in a true OEM like 275whp per my definition. I admire the pioneers who are taking this to 2x-5x beyond the OEM specs, been there done that, don't wanna do it on this car.

    Any input is appreciated.

    Yes you can.

    GT28RS/REVO

Also, do a search (Here on AZ), for GTRS and/or GT28RS so you can get some more info on their reliability.

Like I said before, it will work fine on a big turbo. If you go larger than a 2871R you might want to look at a custom exhaust.
