    Uh Oh (Torque Converter Content)...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey ya'll,

Okay, so my CEL came on late last week. I had the code pulled and it came back saying that my torque converter was stuck in a gear, or something like that??? I didn't write down the code (that's my bad). Anyway, they cleared the code and said that if it came back on then it was definitely an issue. About 20 miles later the CEL came back on.

So, does anyone have a rough estimate as to what I'll be paying if I need to replace my TC? I'm no longer under warranty...so this will be coming out of my pocket

Re: Uh Oh (Torque Converter Content)...

I believe that the code would be torque convertor clutch stuck off, no power transfer. I would look into a TC from VASt about 1k. If you are willing to do it yourself it will take about 15-20hrs. At an indy shop they will probably charge about 2-3k plus parts
    I don't think I care anymore

Are you f'n kidding me? Yes, that is the code that I received, however I'm not having any trouble shifting??? Wouldn't it be cheaper to get all all new friggin transmission???

Don't you have work to do, Peter Pan??? I barely know anyone on SWOV, so I'm sure that's not going to help me a lot. I talked to an indy shop and they said that it could be something electrical or mechanical, so I'll just have to bring it somewhere to have it diagnosed.

I have been driving with that code intermittently for over a year, have a friend with an S4 tip and he drove his like that for almost 2 years. I am just waiting for the TC to fail so I can do the whole upgraded valve bodies and TC. I wouldn't stress about it

I know you are out of warranty, but since there is a Technical Service Bulletin on this issue, have you tried calling Audi of America? Depending on your approach with them, they may be willing to lend goodwill assistance.

Here is a link to the TSB. If you do have this code, do not drive the car, you will overpressurize the transmission and destroy it. Many allroad owners have learned this the hard way.

Thats pretty much what happened to my dads a6 tip. The whole tranny needed to be rebuilt. Ended up costing $3,700 after parts and labor. It messed a lot of stuff up. I wouldn't drive it much until you can fix it if you can help it.

I'm waitin for mine to die so I can rebuild the whole thing, as for the TSB i doubt they will do anything if you have made any power upgrades, my nearest Dealership wont even book the car in for an appointment anymore after my last round of mods

Depending on mileage, mods and dealer, they may or may not do something. But hey, it's a free phone call, so why not give it a try?

Re: Uh Oh (Torque Converter Content)...

Seriously, don't drive the car. I got my TC changed under warranty a few months ago because of the same code. Thank the lord that I was still under CPO when my TC went. It will be a big job because they have to remove everything that is in the way of the tranny to actually get it out. Good luck man, I feel your pain.

Re: Uh Oh (Torque Converter Content)...

I wanted to bump this thread. My car is in the shop and the code is "0741". He stated that the solenoid is not stuck. He's going to change the transmission fluid and see if it 'unclogs' the solenoid and gets the light to turn off. If not, he stated that the TC will need to be replaced.

Can anyone provide me with a ballpark price I'm looking at to have the TC replaced? $2k? $3K?

They tried that with mine to but it didn't work. These cars came from the factory with weak TC seals and over time they start leaking fluid which in turn messes everything up. I hope the tranny fluid change will work for you, but I highly recommend that you don't drive your car with a bad TC, the damage has already been done to the TC and your tranny will be next.

Re: Uh Oh (Torque Converter Content)...

    The famous 17125 fault (P0741)

It's always the torque converter. There's a seal inside the converter to hold hydraulic pressure to lock the clutch when cruising above certain speeds. Mainly highway driving. It's that seal that fails.

It will eventually lead to transmission failure because the fluid gets too much contamination form the clutch particles when the lock-up clutch slips constantly. The clutch particles eventually clog the filter and starve the transmission of fluid. the amount of time varies obviously on many factors but somewhat proportinal to how bad that seal is and how much drag the clutch will have on it. Most people don't notice any symptoms but if you pay close attention, you'll notice the car will be more responsive on the highway when accelerating without downshifting like when you approach an incline after the repair. Slightly better gas mileage too on the highway since there will be less RPM losst form the engine.

Fairly common for 01 2.7T's and VERY common for most all 02 models, even the 1.8T's but hardly for the 4.2's as they use different transmissions (5HP24 instead of the 5HP19)
There are updated torque converters available form the dealer for about 900 - 1000 bucks depending on the specific one used. I've heard of aftermarket or rebuilt converters being available but I myself have not been willing to put my name on them for my customers.

Very important to do the full service as well. I susally see them when they are do for service regardless. The 5HP19 holds about 10 liters and when doing the converter and the service, you'll need slightly over 9 liters. So you end up with really clean fluid afterwards. :)

I generally charge anywhere between 2400 and 2700 depending on specifc model and so forth and extra add ons while doing the job. That's with the latest and greatest converter form the dealer and full service on the transmission. Like I said about the rebuilt and aftermarket converters, I don't like the idea but that doesn't neccesarily mean anything. I charge anywhere from 7 to 9 hours instead of 11 to 13 as called for by labor guides. After pulling so many, they can be done alot quicker than "Book Time"

Another issue I see commonly is the subframe not being aligned properly after the repair from other gerneral "mechanicos". So it leads to screwed tire wear and improper wheel alignment eventhough the car may drive straight after a wheel alignment.

The Indy shops that I speak with all recommend the updated OEM TC. If you are East Coast call Carson at Riverside Audi, if you are West Coast call Craig at genuineaudivwparts.com. Both are Audi dealers that sell parts just above wholesale.

Re: Uh Oh (Torque Converter Content)...

    *UPDATE*

The transmission fluid was flushed and changed three times over the past 4 days. Each time it was flushed it took longer for the CEL to come on, but it did come on each time. The mechanic wanted to make sure there wasn't an easy fix before we jumped into a labor-intensive and expensive job such as changing the TC. So, we're now at the point where the TC does have to be replaced. He is charging me $900 for the TC and it will be roughly $1400 for labor.

There goes my water/meth setup and coilovers
