who wants to see just how bad I f'd up my motor?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
cause it's some pretty unreal shit hahaha.

here's the pictures as promised... out best guess is that for some reason the rod literally twisted and began to bend... then finally snapped the wristpin right out the bottom of the piston - which is shattered (at least the bottom half is) from there a large section of the rod (the entire middle part) went flying through the block/gouged out a good part of it, and the rest is history..

here's the bottom of the piston...

some of the block (and the new windows I installed in the side of it)

pieces of the rod and the wristpin (and the piston again)... pin was totally undamaged, rod was missing a good 4 inch chunk. the only parts that made it were the very top and very bottom haha

the bottom piece still attached to the (THANK GOD) unscathed crank

top of the piston (cyl wall is pretty bad too... not as bad as this though)

and a nice hole in my oil pan

Re: who wants to see just how bad I f'd up my motor?

I'm staying 1.8L, everything is actually at the machine shop right now.. should be back tomorrow so that final assembly can begin. I'm hoping to have it back on the road in 2 weeks or less. my only decision left to make is whether or not I want to upgrade exhaust valves while everything is apart.

and i'm not sure how it happened. I think i bent or twisted the rod at some other point, and it just took awhile to finally let go. (read my other thread as a reference for what i'm talking about)

Just part of the game, you push it, shit breaks. There are plenty of BT owners running around with stock motors happy with 250-260whp and running strong after many many miles. I had a built motor and it STILL broke, shit happens ...

Most BT's people are running (Elim's) only make 250-270whp on pump gas and yes Daniel bought my 3071R as well as new ATP hardware to put back on his built motor

blowing a motor is never any fun, I feel for you. New block doesn't help the matter. Hopefully your crank is still straight, you should get it balanced. What color are your spark plugs?

How is 320chp sad? The S4 4.2 came with 340chp stock and is 300-400 lbs heavier and much slower for way more money.

BTW anything can happen when you double the hp output of a stock motor.

what shawn said. GTRS/Unitronics 630cc file

i guess i was just pushing it a little too hard for the stock motor. 24psi with no timing problems. unfortunately i had just passed my "break in" period and started pushing the car when this happened so i don't have any logs to post up.... wish i did, but the tops of all the pistons looked fine.

thanks man, and the crank was fine. got everything checked out and should be back from the machine shop today or tomorrow. then it's time for final assembly and i just have to wait for the snail and stuff to build my head... (made that decision late last night... it's time for a built small port on stock cams)

Know the facts jack.... these guys are tweking every little thing to extract every bit of power.. 440ccs were the big boy injectors at one time... as you can see lots of people have stepped outside of the standard BT kit...

did unitronics help you out at all after it blew?

when you say you were 'pushing it'... how so? were you advancing timing and tweaking the boost levels... or is pushing it simply driving hard?

nope, but i also didn't ask them to. There's no use blaming them for it when - like mike said - i was pushing (atleast) twice the stock power levels.. i mean, i took an 03 cobra by over 3 lengths and a balls-to-the-wall modified e36 M3 by 1 and a half (from rolls, not digs.. so no quattro advantage there) idk what power that exactly entails.. but it was obviously enough hahaha.

and by pushing it i mean running it hard. i wasn't running it hard when it went - but the damage to the rod (the twist) had probably occurred well before it actually let go and was just steadily getting worse. the only hesitation i ever felt from the car to indicate something was wrong happened right before it blew - and was probably where it twisted to the point that the piston gouged out the cyl wall and then caused enough pressure to snap the rod in two places/rip the wrist pin out.

i guess you can call it a purist mindset... don't get me wrong - I want as much power as possible out of my car, but i feel like we haven't pushed the envelope far enough on the stock displacement for our cars. I love all the 2.0's coming to life in our community, but at the same time i feel like everyone is going to start jumping on that bandwagon and we'll never know the full capabilities of a 1.8L b6. we're some of the last and most different 1.8T's in the audi/vw world; and part of me is really proud of that and i want to represent the part of the community that can't or won't go 2.0 for w/e reason. im actually considering putting the 1.8T badge back on my car hahaha

so in a nut shell - i'm staying 1.8L because i think we've still got a lot to learn/explore/do before going 2.0 (or bigger) is the ONLY way to make more power/go faster.

That's crazy how it bent AND snapped! Hope it comes out even better, man!

So you had a tweaked out BT... think this would happen with a "Stock" APR Stage 3+ kit??
I have been debating, but am a bit worried about blowing up.

Good luck man. It looks like you have it under control and can't wait to see the After pics!

I have been debating, but am a bit worried about blowing up.

Good luck man. It looks like you have it under control and can't wait to see the After pics!
yeah no kidding. I was beyond shocked when i saw the pieces of my motor. i've got the block in my living room as a coffee table, and i'm trying to figure out something decorative to do with the rods hahahaha

on a 3+ you'd probably be fine, i don't think there's ever been a failure on a APR kit - due to the kit. it's a very good approach if you want direct bolt on power, and a very very good kit/tune. if there have been problems with it - there haven't been any recently. talk to lee (rxrep) about it if you're interested in learning more about the kit.

the after pics are coming.. right now there's just many many MANY boxes/bags of parts and hardware hahaha.

Our 1.8Ts are also the most complex from an engine management standpoint. (ME7 FTMFW!) That is why not as much as been done relative to all the other genre's of 1.8Ts in both Audi and VWs....

And I've got a partially complete engine in my garage. Not sure what I'm going to do with it. The internals aren't as valuable as my AMU internals were.

yeah no kidding... but the tuning is only one part of the puzzle. we'll see lots of new gains and changes in the coming months. our platform is really catching on, and we're really growing as a community right now. i also think that's the reason we're seeing so many "failures" right now... a lot of us are really pushing the envelope. we're doing things that we couldn't have possibly predicted the results of. inevitably some of us are having problems - but i don't see them as failures. its a calculated risk which i (and others) was/were ready to pay for (thank god) and which we are learning and growing from.

the results are immediately noticeable too - everyone now has a better understanding of the limits on our stock internals, and people are slowly getting a better feel for whats needed to really push their cars to the next level.

when i joined this forum, there was no talk of "gt30/35r" or "2.0L" or anything like that with the b6 guys... a few had plans in the works... but nothing solid. and just over a year later look where we are. there are going to be at least 3 or 4 cars at waterfest which should be ready to seriously contend for the platform's world record quarter mile.

shit like that makes me proud to own a b6 a4

A set of rods and pistons and some Plexi would make great little table! If you only got 3... then make a cool little end table or something! As long as the cap can be tightened down real good... you could even spread the rods out at a 45 degree angle for a little wider stance!

Thanks for the APR Stage3+ pep talk too!

Yeah those guys just have to pray the weather conditions dont suck like they do every year at the waterfest event.

These cars can go a full second slower at Etown when its 90+ degs and 90+ humidity.

I feel exactly what you are saying. First of this year I had an "incident" on my k04 which happened to cause a similar problem you had in cyl 2 (5 deg F, ethanol on a race file and some mad timing advancement found that magic 100 lb/ft of tq per hole stock rods can take (and it only takes a split second!)...which is why it makes sense cyl 2 gave in given the intake/exhaust manifold tracks). I am staying 1.8t (allbeit closer to 1.9 based on the little bit of bore I need on the block we (the shop I'm working with) aquired to make everything "as new" in the cyls). While my setup is taking quite a bit more time....(nearing 5 months) there is good reason, which will show itself here in the near future. This is gonna be nearly completely a 1-off job top to bottom. results will be here soon!

Ted did this happen during a WOT pull, and then you let your foot off the pedal for a split second, then slammed it into WOT again and boom? I noticed while logging and doing that, that the cf's will jump up 2-3 fold for a split second and fall to normal.
