    Body shop guys: Door moldings...

I want to shave my door moldings,i love the way it looks. So i went to a few body shops my friends own and they said its a wicked pain in the ass to do. One of the friends has a b5 a4 and he did it on his car and said it required tons of work...

Anyone who has had it done, what did the shop charge you? Has anyone attempted to do it themselves? I can weld,no problem there,so im thinking if i welded the holes behind them, and then brought it to a shop itd be a whole lot cheaper...

anyone have pictures of what the holes look like behind the moldings so i can see what i'd be getting myself into...

p.s.- this is just a "feeler", if its too intense i wont do it haha

You're gonna have to grind down to the metal, and I'm not sure what size the holes are, so you would either just tack over them until they're filled, or use a tiny piece of metal to fill it. once you're done, you're gonna have to grind everything down until its basically 100% smooth, then use a skim coat to go over it. I think the "wicked pain in the ass" part comes from all the blocking needed afterwards to get the panels back to 100% flat, to the point where any/all waves are gone.

What you could also do it rip the doors apart and take everything out grind the inside of where the holes are and then just use fiberglass from the interior of the door... what happens then is when you put the fiberglass downwith the sheets and resin you will actually push some of it outside after it dries you could either you fiberglass bondo or just use the resin to fill in the remainder of the hole... after that just sand with like 180 grid to get the shape and then you putty to fill in the scratches that you did with the 180.. after sand with 220 and prime with filler primer... Let dry and wetsand with like 320 or 400.. when you finished sanding thatpart of the door then scuff the remainder part and paint..

It a long process but if you do all the work yourself and then just get someone to paint it its not that bad..

eurocheese :-) ... You cant really weld door skins all to well. The skin is so thin that it will warp (distort). Thats why i Told Rich to use that special sauce....do you remember? -Rob
