Re: custom intake and a new pic of my car

I was thinking about doing a similar cone filter/heatshield setup myself. How does the engine sound with the cone filter installed? and did the filter for the SAI come with the big one?

Re: custom intake and a new pic of my car

the small filter is just a 1/2 inch inlet with some electrical tape wrapped around it to match the inside diameter of the SAI inlet, and no it didnt come with the big one. The only time i notice a sound difference is at WOT you hear the turbo spooling up but engine noise hasnt changed... If anyone is interested i can put a whole kit together for about $60 including shipping i had the custom adapter made to go from 2 1/2" to 4"

yes the heatshield is included, because you just reuse the one attached to the factory airbox with the little custom bracket i made.. i include instructions with the kit for removal of factory airbox and installation of the new intake, it works even better with a TIP upgrade, i made one for my friend with a neuspeed TIP and it sounds amazing with an exhaust. and you hear the DV alot more. the kit i came up with allows you to reinstall the factory airbox, there is absolutely no modification to any part of the car.

Re: custom intake and a new pic of my car

well after some spirited driving you can touch the filter and its only warm to the touch where the heat shield is blazing as is everything on the engine side of it, it doesnt do as much as i would like absolute, but it is definitely better than none at all. i am working on a better solution but havnt had the time yet. but whats it matter if its a warm air intake, a front mount will cool the air down enough for it not to matter. i dont know if i would use it on a completely stock car

The FMIC will only help so much, so the warmer the air is going into the turbo the higher the IAT's will be after the FMIC.

Because the heat shield doesn't go all the way forward to the radiator support your filter is getting hot air coming from the radiator. I have measured temps behind the radiator while driving in 70F degs and the temp sensor was reading over 125F degs.

Cool, I want to do something similar to my 3.0 only with a bigger heat shield that separates the filter from the engine better. Also you didn't leave the stock fresh air inlet tube on there? I figure it may not do a thing, but it also might help get a little cold air to the filter as well.

The mess above the filter looks ghastly, and all I can intuit it sucking in is warm to hot air.

What's so bad about the OEM airbox in the first place (other than, perhaps, the look)? If it's sound you're after it's hard to beat the $0 swiss-cheese-airbox mod, which I can vouch for.

And I'd second taking absolutegtr's and Mike's suggestion about the heatshield...

i totally agree with you mike, i have been doing some temp tests as well with my laser style digital thermometer i got from mac tools, the heat shield isnt as good as it could be but it definitely cooled the filter down alot from the test drive i did w/o it. i am in the process of fabricating a better heat shield with some sort of ducting coming into the area from the grill area. thanks for all the input gentlemen, its definitely still a work in progress, i am gonna put on a new TIP soon and complete the heat shield. and then if anyone wants to buy a kit, i will have some for sale...

i am not daily driving the car, i am just kind of using it to make some parts at the moment, i am just kind of fitting things i am going to use on my BAT project, me and clint are coming up with a custom equal length tubular manifold to use on his car and my car in the next few monthes. and the wires are going to be re-routed soon i was thinking of doing a wire tuck on most of the engine bay. everything i have right now is just temporary as i mock up certain parts of the kit i am fabricating.

i was not looking for a change in IAT, i was looking for a little better throttle response and i got an improvement... its still nothing like a naturally aspirated engines throttle response but its better than it was factory and to me it was worth it. i spent about $50 and i dont think thats alot of money, even if in your mind i wasted it

you really need a bigger shield that can stretch near the headlight and taller. in the summer, when you have AC on, the fan will blow all the hot air to everywhere of your engine, that shield you have now doesn't do shit.
good luck fabricating a new shield

remember to wrap the shield with something that dissipate heat very well like the stuff they use in NASCAR.

That makes no sense, you want to do the opposite. You want your shield to insulate, to reflect the heat, instead of absorbing it. It’s a heat shield, not a heat sink.

dissipate heat doesn't mean absorb the heat. if you don't wrap the shield, the shield will get hotter. but if you apply some materials that dissipate heat, the shield will stay cooler, so the air on the filter side will stay cooler as well. that's how I see it

You first have to absorb to be able to dissipate.

With a heat wrapped cat/tp, that looks like a good setup.

that is pretty nice looking absolute... i may try and fab up something similar, what material did you use? right now i am just playing with everything and planning out a topmount tubular equal length manifold for a BAT setup, i have the collector made, and i just need to play with tubing placement to stay equal length, hopefully will be using all vband setup as well, except turbo to mani flange. and where can i get some custom tuning done... anyone know? i am not gonna blow up my engine with some off the shelf software.

i think you need a little more heat sheild. MattA4 (B5 owner) make a bigger heat sheild for cheap.

Its not like CAI's are a new thing on the A4 1.8T, people have been doing them since the B5 came out in 97.

The K03 doesn't exactly flow enough air to cause the stock box to be a huge restriction and to get gains with a cone filter you must get more fresh air from outside the engine bay.

When testing a CAI with a K03 back in 00-01, I was able to drop .3 off my ET's at the drags when getting very little fresh air to the filter vs running no head light to get fresh air directly to the filter. I again saw the same difference when running a T28 setup.

A good start. This reminds me I need to fab up a heatshield for my intake prior to going on the dyno for final tuning. If you think your engine compartment is hot, you should see mine.
