how hard will this be. my friend crashed his s4 and told me that if i did a swap into my a4 , i could have his engine and tranny. he told me that it has to be done within 7 days or else i would have to give him $3000 for his set up. i need help. is this possible and can it be done? and has anyone ever completed an a4 to as4 swap?

Contact aixgelo78, RAD69, mat@induktion, or ckymike on AW. All have done this. I believe there are three or four others as well. My feeling though, is that unless you are prepared to do the work yourself, it's going to be quite expensive. There's more to it than just physically swapping a motor and transmission. It may be that given the falling prices of B5 S4s, that there is no advantage to such a swap, especially since when you're done, you still won't have a complete S4. At a minimum, you'll need motor, and most accessories, subframe, ECU, axles, knuckles, wiring harnesses, transmission, driveshafts, rear differential, and full exhaust. There are several exterior and interior differences as well, that you would need for a truely complete conversion.

A quick search on AW reveals lots of threads. Here's one that includes posts from three people who have actually completed such a swap:

Is your A4 a 2.8, or a 1.8T? Quattro? DBW? All are factors to consider when evaluating this swap. You won't be the first, and I find it highly unlikely that you'll be done by Waterfest.

Yeah I had talked to him before about his whole process. It's cool, but to some extent you might as well get an S4.

Did think it was funny seeing two side mounts and cloth interior but an A4 badge and 2.7 motor.

Hey, it's me. Yes Vagmotorsports has done a lot of swaps.

About 15 clients have swapped a6 or allroads or S4 2.7T in their A4's...

About 4 of them including mine are running gt kits on them.

If I had to do it again I would keep the A4 drivetrain that is as tough.

Mike Hood has proved it.

I would avoid S4 brakes and go directly to a big aftermarket brake kit.

As for the ECU and Harness, not that hard if your car is 2000 and older

Alex at Vag can sell you a direct fit harness.

VAG has done a few 96-99 swaps but these takes more time because of the cluster and other acessories.

For my car, it's a 99.5

I have swapped an S4 leather interior, cluster but retained my A4 console.

My block is from an A6 2002, my tranny is from an 2001 S4.
