Does anyone know what this part is?

#3 in the picture... Seems that other AWM's I have seen don't have this... I know I am not the only one, but I am thinking of removing it and plugging 1 where 2 is... Reason being, to clean the bay up a little and because 3 is pitting and the wire going to it is corroded about 99% of the way through...

Never seen that before but it looks like it's using the valve cover as a grounding point.

Yes, I am thinking it may be a filter of some sort but not sure what it would be filtering...

I have seen a picture of another car that also had that extension but not the #3 part.

Fitlers Out The Engine Hum That Goes Through The Radio If It Was Not There. We All Know What That Sounds Like! I BET THE PREVIOUS OWNER PUT IT IN. DID IT COME WITH AN AFTERMARKET RADIO? ON AN AWM THERE SHOULD BE 2 BROWN WIRES GROUNDED TO THE VALVE COVER BY COIL 1 WITH A 10MM BOLT. DOSEN'T LOOK LIKE YOU HAVE THAT. SO THEY MAY HAVE BEEN HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE NOISE AND PUT THAT IN FROM AN EARLIER CAR.

Quattro, I have a VERY early 2001... Like one of the first ones... The ground point you are talking about is there, just not in the picture... And no, no aftermarket radio...

Re: Does anyone know what this part is?

    WHOA -

PLEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAASE tell me there is a part number on that harness extension. DUDE, I'll pay ya if need be to find out what all part numbers you can find on that thing.

I've come across little gagdet a couple of times and never put all too much thought into it untill I came across another car needing a harness repair, sortoff. The dealers I've spoken to all looked at me like I was talking chinese when I tried to get one of these tings.

What happens sometimes is that the coil harness connectors will get bad connections and the dealer like to sell what are called "overlay harnesses" when dealing with certain VW application. They claim it's not recommended for Audi applications and have no idea about this extension piece. The issue is that the harness connectors will cause misfires because the female electriacl contact will not hold very tight. In severe cases you could get the engine to misfire by simply wiggiling the harness connectors. So these extensions are used as a harness repair kit but VW wants you to splice in a new harness with connectors for all the coils in order to make good connections at the coils.

I came across a car not long ago where one of the coil connectors was physically damaged and tried to get a hold of one of these extensions to use as a repair. The issue was that the retainer clip in the harness connector was damaged and apperantly every couple of weeks, sometimes months, the connector would work itself loose enough to cause misfires. Basicly need to get one of these things so I could use some electrical tape to hold the extension piece to the harness connector and in turn get a good connector onto the coil.

The other bonus is the RFI Filter/supressor. I have another customer with a TT whose RFI filter had broken right where the wire is molded into the little black box. Well the wire broke, so we can't slice it again and the only solution we could come up with was a new wiring harness which would have cost the guy 2500 - 3000 large after parts and labor. Needless to say he's living with bad radio reception.

Would you be willing to post a VIN and specific engine code for you car.

I only have one customer I know of sure having this thing but he lives about 200 miles away shedules all his work when he's in the puget sound area. So I can't really ask him to make a special trip and he's not all too savy, so he probably would not understand what I'm yalking about. Actually, he'd probably be insulted at the idea of even having to remove the engine cover. LOL

I'd say that you could remove it if you wanted to and see if you start getting missfire issues or bad radio reception. Probably wana wiggle the connector as well to make sure but I would assume it was installed for a good reason at some point.

Seriously though, thank so much for posting a pic of this. This should help alot to convince my dealer I'm not talking out of my ace and can show them what I'm taliking about with a printed pic. I've been trying to get this figured out for soooooooo long now.

    Again though -

Part Numbers, VIN, Engine Code puh puh puh pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzee

Re: Does anyone know what this part is?

Sorry, VW/Audi was dumb enough to put the part number on a paper tag which, due to heat and moisture is gone... HOWEVER, I have a BERU part number.. 0 310 025 015. It is a 4.7uf 110V capacitor. In all honesty, you can make these, or I can help make one. It would probably be around $40 to make it... Just need some wire and the connectors from VW/Audi...

My buddy works at the dealer and I will ask him for a part number... I haven't found one yet but it does exist I am sure...

I would let you have this harness but it is nice and crunchy... As I said, we could make them for fairly cheap... If all you are looking for is an extender... The filter would be a different story... I will keep you up to date... Where is Woodinville anywho? I am in Olympia (and seeking employment) if you want help! LOL!

It is an AWM motor, last few of the vin are 001507.

Re: Does anyone know what this part is?

I had a feeling that's what you were gonna say about the part#, or the sticker that is.

I would actually be interested in that excat piece. I've talked to my dealer as well about making something of the sort myself by ordering all the individual components but it would still require splicing wires if using the harness/wiring repair parts from the dealer, leaving an ungly buldge under the shrink wrap. that would also be the only cost effective source I've ever even heard of for the RFI filter as they are all "hard wired" into the harnesses on all the other cars but not available seperately and it seems almost every 1.8T car with one of those that I see, the wire is hanging by just a couple of strands. Just ordering that piece as is would make for a nice clean repair and help many others with radio reception I'm sure. Well, on top of a fresh set of coils and plugs. Most people with aftermarket radios wouldn't really have the reception issue.

Thanx anyways though, the picture alone will help tremendously so that the JO at the dealer won't just blow off now that I can show him that I'm not full of BS, ........, I hope at least.

As for Woodinville. Just north of redmond and kirkland and all that jazz. I'm on the edge of King County next to snohomish county. Still within reach of Microsqueeshy land. As for help, Sorry, but if anything I would be needing help in the office before needing help in the shop. I'm barely reaching the 2 year mark and things are going good but I still can't justify hiring a bunch of employee's. I started with next to nothing and no big loans from banks and all that, so I still have to take baby steps, so to say.

Though I will say that I'm finally getting close, real close to getting them pathetic websites of mine straightened out and just last week committed to an advertisment program which looks like it may actually do real good. Looking at all the traffic my sites have been getting all this time, it's no wonder I don't get all too many resulting calls. I've been real bad about my sites because I've been so good with referral biz and haven't had the time. But I'm finally making the time because referral biz is good, but not good enough for the plans I have. Another thing I would like to do is get a little more involved here on this and a couple of other forums. I got off to a pretty rough start here on zine, .....LOL, but I think most of you guys and gals could appreciate what I have to offer. Been thinking about making an intro in the regional section and putting some thought into sponsoring here on zine. So who knows, maybe in the next couple of months I'll start getting REALLY overwhelmed and will need help. I'll be sure to put it out there if so. A place like this would be one of the first places I would start to look as I wouldn't even consider hiring most techs who are already in the industry, especially not dealer techs. But that's another discussion all together.

Thanx again though, the pic really will help tremendously.

WELL... After about 5 hours of searching, I have found NOTHING! I looked at very harness in ETKA and all local man harnesses... I would still like to know the story behind this as to why the early ones have it and the laters do not...

Re: Does anyone know what this part is?

I've seen it on both early and late 01 B5's, which would both be AWM, DUUHHH, Stupid me. I'm tempted to say I've seen it in 00's as well.

Never seen it on AMB's (B6) though

This has got to be something used as a repair kit on another model of some sort and just a couple of guys out there who know what it is and what it can be used for.

This thing could be a life saver when dealing with faulty harness connectors.

I'm thinking I need to dig through more Audi and VW TSB's to come up with an answer, ..., I hope.

BTW - You have a copy of ETKA??? How old is it???

check the other post you brought up... and no it doesn't effect the coils. Just gets rid of engine whine (signal noise)
