Re: Anyone with a sound system or knowledge on sound systems..

Infinity Kappa's are great for the price. I paid that much (each) for the Reference series 12" 6 months ago.

I've been really happy with Infinity/Harmon Kardon stuff. I'd definitely recommend it to somebody that's budget minded but wants a good well balanced stereo.
300-350RMS would make that thing really happy, and you'd probably end up turning it down.

Honestly, that's a lot of links and I didn't click on them all. A sealed box in the .8-1.2ft^3 range will make that thing happy. I had a Reference 10" in my S10 with a 1.8Ft^3 box and it was definitely too big. 10" don't like big boxes. Sounded good, but the power handling dropped significantly b/c of the size of the box.

yea i had a 12" infinity reference series a long time ago and really liked it. Check my last link, you think that box would be good size for a 10" sub?

Re: Anyone with a sound system or knowledge on sound systems..

Infinitys arent bad for the price. I have never been a big fan of them, but I am also someone who likes to pound out some rap, or turn the sub volume down a tad and listen to something like A7x.

dont get the punch series of RF. When it comes to mainsteam audio, IMHO, try to stick with mid to upper line. People might chime in and say they had their punches pounding y0, but pounding and sounding good are 2 different sides of the spectrum.

Look into http://www.edesignaudio.com/ eD audio. great unground company with some really good prices.

there is also JL's w3 series that is pretty good, their amps are high, but you dont have to use their amp though either.

i'm not sure what i'd use if i was building something in my audi

but you can check here for just a ton of shit if you're looking for good prices

    www.woofersetc.com

it doesnt matter what size the box is, whether its a 10 in a 4 cubic foot box or a 15 in a 1.5 cubic foot box, you need to get a box or build a box that puts the subs within their specs. 99% of 10's on the market are in the .5-.8 range for sealed and 12's are generally .6-1.2 depending. but 5-6 years ago, Orion (before they were bought out and sold in pep boys) HCCA 10 had a recommended box size of 6 cubic feet for sealed.

I just looked at your amp links above, cause I didnt on my way down.

do not use either of those amps. both are cheapy, no where near what they are rated at, will run hot and dirty as hell (not a clean amp, meaning it doesnt put out the greatest power)

It's hard to tell. It's a pre-fabbed box. It doesn't say anything about tuning frequencies, thickness of the MDF or volume of the enclosure. It does say external dimensions, not internal.
For $20 and no required effort in designing, measuring or time. It might not be too bad. Would I recommend it, no. Would I build a custom enclosure, YES.

Amp and sub combos are worth looking around for.
You can probably spend less money and still get pretty good quality sound at the same time.
The Sub you were looking at is switchable(DVC) 1ohm or 4ohm. The 102.7w 10", If you look at the 104.7w 10" it's switchable between 2 ohm and 8 ohm.
That way you can use a smaller(in size) amp that'll push decent quality sound at 2ohm. For example, the Infinity 1300a Mono amp is only rated @ 200W RMS @ 4ohm. At 2 ohm that will push 300W RMS, and make that Kappa woofer sound great. Do you need to match the amp and sub brands, NO. Does it look nice, yes.
You can use a $200 amp that will work(very well) for your setup, instead of spending $300 for something off the shelf that a minimum wage salesman @ a chain store would talk you into.

JL Audio makes nice stuff. The unfortunate part is that the price follows. I wouldn't recommend their stuff on the fact that #1 everyone overrates their abilities and sound quality and #2 most of us are on a budget of less than $1K for subwoofer setups.

Alpine Type R's Are nice. Are they proven reliable and CAN sound decent, yes. What most people don't get is the idea of sound quality. I haven't heard a Type R woofer sound that good. Loud yes, quality, no. It can be done though.

The woofer you're looking at is recommended for a .5-.98cu ft sealed box. I'd recommend going to the larger end of that. A box that's approx 1.0cu ft would be able to maintain crisp quick bass and allow for enough speaker movement for the low notes. Don't expect to hit 20-30Hz real well w/ a 10" woofer.

EDIT: I've used Power Acoustik amps before. I won't use them again. The price looks nice. 6 weeks down the road a trunk clam baked with smoke doesn't smell nice either.

Alpine Type Rs componers are really nice but to truly take full advantage of their quailty, they need to be amped. I had a set of infinity kappas highs in my gsx back in the day. good quality good sound. they arent very bassy though. I'm def partial to the Type R subs though. nice clean sound, very lilttle distortion

ok then, thanks guys for the input, im pretty much being told that if i dont spend at least 125-150 on a subwoofer it will sound shitty, and if i dont spend at least $150 on an amp its going to be shitty....

someone show me and amp and sub woofer thats the best quality for $100 or under..

yea i was thinking about a type r. A few questions though.

Would it be a bad idea just to get a 2 channel amp and bridge it on 4 ohms?

Is a mono amp going to be better for 1 sub woofer? Does that mean you can run 2 ohms?

    How is this amp?

BTW, cant spend more then $225 on both amp and sub.

audiobahn stuff.. i dont know. their amps use to get super hot, and again, a cheapy dirty type amp. a buddy has all audiobahn in his show truck and it sounds good, but its not drove every day so i cant say how it will hold up over time.

you def cant beat the price on that kicker amp and that type r sub. i'd just spend a little more and get that, then ebay the wiring. you can get stinger 4ga on there for 1.25 a foot.

Re: Anyone with a sound system or knowledge on sound systems..

I don't like AudioBahn stuff. I never have, and I don't plan on ever liking them.

Mad_Audi I was referring to the Type R's the opposite way around. Their Components are nice and clean, the subs are loud and I don't like their sound. That's me though, everybody's ears are a little different.

If you can only spend $225 on an amp and sub combo, save your money.
The last set of amps I purchased I picked up the week a new place opened up and they gave me a deal from $780 list, down to $600. That's for two amps, not one.
I would consider those mediocre amps, and nothing special.
I bought this the week it came out. I bought them from a dealer, not onlinecarstereo.com, which BTW is junk.

    OCS - Zeus ZXi4406
That's what I paid $600 for, deal was for a both amps.
Sounded good for awhile. The 4ch is starting to suck ass.

Re: Anyone with a sound system or knowledge on sound systems..

I try to push these whenever I can, especially for someone on a budget.

    http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=295-462

If you aren't a big bass head, but just want something extra, one of those in a .7 cubic foot ported enclosure tuned to 30hz will be plenty, trust me

You would need an amp that does about 350-400 watts RMS @ 4ohms (either mono or two channel, doesn't matter), then all other associated installation goodes.

If you don't want to build your box (I didn't either, I'm lazy), I went with a box builder I found over on a car audio forum. Here's a link to the post I made with the box he built, and also where you can find contact info on the guy I used: http://www.caraudiojunkyard.com/foru...enclosure.html

Oh, btw IIRC he charged me 119 shipped for this box, probably in the 60ish range for one half the size.

Quick question the speakers in the front doors are 6.5" which is also the same as the ones in the trunk shelf right?
