Synthetics last longer than conventional. Often times people change to synthetic simply for the longer intervals. Many car manufacturers are increasing oil change intervals as well with synthetics, including European car makers such as VW/AUDI. BMW even going as far as saying every 15k for their naturally aspirated cars.
The best way to know when you should change your oil is to send a sample in for an oil analysis, but it's not really worth the hassle. Using synthetic, I personally change my oil every 3-4k - but I know it's good for much more than 5k miles with the turbo and a true synthetic but there are many reasons an oil can break down faster - such as not being properly at operating temp before running it hard, average rpms, etc.. So I, along with many people like to change it early.
Unless it's your track car that was put to good use in the last 5000 miles, you should be fine.
willowtree, even though I agree he'll be fine.. thats a bad comparison/example imo.. especially with the history the 1.8t has.
