Do you really need a new exhaust if you go k04?

I've been looking at k04 kits for an 01 TQM and most of these kits say that you *need* an aftermarket exhaust system in order to go bigger turbo. Is this really true or can you get away with the stock system? I would also be interested in going custom exhaust if there was a place that would describe the exact components I would need in order to piece it together (I'm too cheap to pay ~$850 for a borla kit)

If you search AW you should find the answer is NO. It helps to get the most out of the k04 but people have just put the k04 on with a stock cat, DP and exhaust.

for just k04 and chip, exhaust is recommend but not necessary. If you go pc16 i would recommend getting 2.5 inch exhaust. There are good and bad points to it. Good: less back pressure and nice deep sound and about 10 more hp. Bad, sometimes can be too loud if you want the stealth sound and your stock is stainless steel as well so not like it will rust out. Personally, I just like that fact that there's less back pressure and that also keeps the turbo cooler. So it's really your own preference if you want the sound or not. Make sure you also upgrade your dv to tt or forge.

the ko4 on stock exhaust will generate more heat than a chipped ko3 will on the stock exhaust, and we know how many people have cat/dp failures
