Question replaced cluster, need to reset miles...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Alright guys, I finally replaced the cluster because of that damn screen, but now I need to reset the mileage. Any info on how to do it? I searched and came up empty handed. Also after swapping clusters, the EPC light is now on with the new cluster... do I just need to clear codes, or is it something to worry about?

Re: replaced cluster, need to reset miles...

If it is brand new and has less than 100 miles, go to Adaptation Ch 9... Insert your previous mileage...

If your mileage was say, 85,000 miles you need to input 08500 into the Adaptation Ch... Pretty much, you only insert everything above the 1's column... If your mileage was 135,940, you insert 13594. OR if you want to be a guinuea pig, you can buy VAGTACHO on ebay and try that... It is about $75 and you can probably sell it for that much when done with it...

With your EPC light, you need to do the correct soft coding... If you are a 1.8t, you need to insert a coding of 02244. If you are a 2.8, you need to insert a code of 02262.

ALSO, you need to re-install your old cluster and get the values of Measuring Blocks 10-15, 125 and 140...

Meauring blocks each correspond to an Adaptation Channel...

Vagcom will tell you which channel in those blocks... 10-15 are the actual values needed to insert into the adaptation channel... 125 and 140 need a bit of math... But for 125 and 140, those are adaptation 60 and 62 respectively... For adaptation Ch 60, the number to insert should either be 00005 or 01209... Mine didn't take 1209 but that is what my old cluster read... Ch 62 should either be a 00 or 01... The Bentley says it should be a 1 but that didn't work, it only worked with 0... As you are testing 62, take a look at your radio information in your cluster, choose which one displays the info...

Hmm all interesting information that I am going to try and do tomorrow with my palm pilot and VAGmobile. So I go to Adaptation Ch9... and if my mileage was 154,532, I would insert 15453 and the odometer would just loose that 2 miles?

Re: replaced cluster, need to reset miles...

This will only work if you have 100 miles or LESS on the cluster... Did you get it new from the dealer or just got lucky with finding a used cluster with good lines? I just got luck because BoringB5 had one with 2000 miles more than what my car actually had... I didn't mind gaining 2k miles for working cluster....

Re: replaced cluster, need to reset miles...

i recommend you read on ross tech how to do this they state you have to do it in kilometers then change the cluster back, i've done this before on a new cluster and it worked fine.

if it's a new cluster dont drive it past 60 miles or else you're stuck.
100 miles is incorrect it's 100 kms which is about 62 miles. trust me i know the hard way ;)

I purchased reman'd clusters from the dealer and never had to change the soft coding I don't know why so many values should be altered unless they came from a different car (different part # i would imagine).

Re: replaced cluster, need to reset miles...

Evok...... has it just about sumed up on the proceedure. Though Richard is also partially correct as well, (from what I understand). In this case, I believe the limit will be 100 miles. On earlier clusters where the mileage would have to be entered in the equivilant kilometer value and kilometers were simply converted to mileage for the drivers display. On those clusters, I believe, the initial adjustable mileage total for adaptation value was different before being permanently locked. Never had any issues myself as I have always just set everything imidiately before handing cars back to customers. Either way, once the mileage adaptation value is permanently locked, you're screwed unless you can get your hands on a knock-off copy of VagTacho or VagDashCom or something of the like. There's also something called VagCan Commander but costs big bucks. Though, Duram from Durametric speaks highly of it. A little touchy on Cayenne's according to him.
Anywho, mileage can only be set in 10 mile increments as Evok.... mentioned.

You don't have Immo 3 in that car, so you don't have to go to the dealer or one of very few like me with a certified VAS 5052 to set mileage and readapt all key's for the Immo.

All you need to do before doing the mileage adaptation is to go through the log in. Being an old car like this, Vag Com should give the log in code by simply clicking on the box in which you would enter the login code and leaving the curser sit still for a second or two. A box will pop up and give you the login code to enter. once the login is done, then the mileage adaptation channel will be unlocked if the mileage limit has not been exceeded. Same thing goes for the soft coding if Vag Com has the possible coding numbers available for the particular cluster module, which it should considering how old it is. Usually all the other adaptation values will already be set correctly on OE Rebuilt clusters. Key word being usually. So it's always best to write everything down before unplugging the old.

As for the EPC light, run an auto scan, you shouldn't be having an EPC light on if the cluster was not coded correctly. You would just have some faults stored in various modules for an incorrectly coded module on the Can Bus network, (even though this car doesn't have a "real" Can-Bus network, but rather just a Can Gatway which emulates some Can-Bus functions. That's another issue.) Set everything on the new cluster and scan everything and go from there.

Curious though, how's VagCom on a mobile device of some sort??????????
I run on a Samsung Q1 UMPC running fully functional XP Tablet. I didn't even know VagCom could be used on windows mobil, but again, how's it work?????????????

Re: replaced cluster, need to reset miles...

Soo basically, your saying I'm screwed if the cluster has over 100 miles on the odometer, correct? In which I'm screwed because it has roughly 80k.

As for running it on windows mobil, its all I've ever personally used, but it seems to be very similar to regular.

Well, get the VAGTacho... It supposedly works but as I said, it is $75... Then you can rent it out probably or sell it again!

You Can Always Code It To More Mileage But Not Less, Even Over 100 Miles On It. I Would And Try To Code It To 999999 Drive Around The Block For That 1 Mile And It Might Reset Back To 0 Then You Could Code It To Your Cars Mileage. I Ve Been Wondering If This Would Work For A Long Time But Havent Tried!!!

You cannot code it for more mileage, trust me on this, if you dont believe me try it on yours.

I am in the same situation now. I don't want to buy the VAG-COM license as it's expensive. Is there any way that I can replace it in a cheaper way? Or should I just ask my mechanics to replace for me?

I've also tried to code for mileage. It ain't happening. Never heard of VAG tacho though. Well, vag taco but I don't see how one of those would help...not that it could hurt...

I have a vagtacho cable and software. It's a pain in the butt to get working the first time, but once working it's a nice tool. I've reset many VW cluster's with the tool, just haven't tried it on an audi cluster before. Shoot me a PM if you have any questions...
