DIY: SAT Radio in place of Ashtray/ Cig. Lighter

    Just thought I would share.

I had searched for common places to install a sat. radio reciever but didnt like the AC vents or the windshield suction cup mount.

I also wasnt very thrilled about the possibility to drill holes anywhere to mount the reciever.

And so, I set about to find a clean alternative. I ended up with this. \/

    CONTINUE ON FOR DIY

I started by removing the ash tray/ cig. lighter assembly. I just popped ash tray out and the whole part circled in red will pull out.

    (Not my pic)

With that removed I unpluged the cig lighter. With the lighter unpluged you can apply pressure to the rear of the cig lighter (female plug) and the entire cig lighter assembly will push out the front of the plastic trim piece with the ash tray.

Once that was out I plugged the lighter back into the harness and tucked it back into the space left by the removed ash tray. I then cleaned the plastics which were newly exposed with a damp cloth to get all the cig ashes left by the PO.

I was surprised that the bottom of the AC controls was a smooth surface and that there was barely enough room to use my starmate 4's suction cup mount up-side-down.

After a few attempts at getting good suction on the bottom of the AC controls failed I figured I would try to clean the surface. I wiped down the flat plastic surface with rubbing alchohol and tried suction again.

Sucess! I got a great mount on the newly cleaned surface.

Sooooo I ran my antena wires and just hooked up the 5v cig lighter plug into the new hidden cig. lighter tucked behind the console.

    Viola! Ultra clean factory look.

With the upside down suction cup mount and all of the wires hidden the shifter isnt even close to hitting the reciever in 1st, 3rd, or 5th.

Just thought it would help future searchers!

    Good Luck

I thought you were going to mount it flush with the console.

Yea, but then it would be pretty much un-readable at that angle.
