Step one. The songs have to be in MP3 format. So, you'll have to burn the iTunes purchases as audio CDs. Then import them back in as MP3. You are free to delete the previous mp4 or whatever files iTunes gives you. Then you'll have no problems with DRM. This serves another purpose as well. You will now have a back up copy of your music if your HDD crashes. It's a long, time consuming process, but I did it to my collection.
Next, get a 4GB SD card that IS NOT SD HC. Those will not work in the nav unit. Like JMG said before, make some folders to browse through, like artists and what not. You can place about 400 items ion the SD card. You probably will not fill up the 4GB card unless you have encoded the MP3s at higher bit rates. You can fill up the 4GB card, but the nav unit will only read so much. This happened to me before. Just have to cut some stuff out.
This is the exact card I have, and I bought it for around $60...it's cheaper now:

I have a program called Synctunes (mac only) which transfers my playlists over to the SD card. Just choose the playlist and hit sync. That's it! You can have multiple playlists, as they will show on the nav screen. However, all those playlists count as an item. The more playlists and folders you have, the less music you'll be able to access.
Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
