So I replace the oil temp sensor, now it doesn't work at all!

I had the problem where my oil temp guage would take like a good 10-15 mins to move off of 150, and when it did it would fall back to dead cold then shoot up to where it should be after driving that long. ANYWAYS. So i replaced it with the part that ECS sells, its the OEM Febi unit. NOW the dam thing doesnt read at all! its weird though, after a drive Ill shut my car off, and when i go to restart when i do restart, the oil temp is shown the needle is up, and as the car sits while idling the temp will just fall back to 150 and not move the whole time. what the EF?!

Mine is doing the same thing. Did your also spike to really high temps real quick then fall back to normal? Looks like I may need a new sensor as well.

Re: So I replace the oil temp sensor, now it doesn't work at all!

^^ yeah that sounds like a new sensor... so here's my problem.... this is gay/weird.... after a drive i will turn my car off, if i then turn it back into the ON position or turn the car over, it will read the temp, then slowly but surely it will just fall back to 150. LOL. what the hell!

so its got a short you think? i was looking for a fuse that it could be but i didnt know if the oil had its own which im sure it doesnt. any idea which fuse i can check and or what lines i can check. i mean, the old sensor worked OK when we took it out, not OK but it would just take like 10 mins to show anything, and it would just shoot up to temp instead of gradually showing it. like after 20 mins it would shoot up to 200 lol, no 150-175 involved!

Re: So I replace the oil temp sensor, now it doesn't work at all!

I would check the wires going into the plug for the sensor. You may have a loose wire somewhere in there. I know when I swapped mine it worked no problem. I doubt it's a blown fuse since that would cause it not to work at all.

true yeah. im going to order up a new harness down there.... i looked at the wires and i mean they are all going into their little places down there on the plug. so im thinking new harness and cut the old off reinstall with new?

If the connections look good I would suspect the sensor.

Did you buy one of the aftermarket senders? A friend of mine said his S4 was doing the same with his Febi ( I think that was the brand) sensor. He replaced it with the OEM Bosch one and its apparently fixed now.

Same. On Audiworld we had a huge group email going around for a few months. I took out the FEBI I got from ECS, replaced with OEM Hella, and that fixed it.

I returned it as well. They were like, well take it out. I said WELL I'm not doing an oil change until I have to. So I took it out installed Hella I got from Riverside Audi through Carson from AW, then sent back the Febi, they tested it and refunded me.

I believe from the Audiworld thing I read as well its only relevant to the 2000 model year.

troof. It's actually 2001.5 and up will work with the Febis, not the 2001 or 2000.

I did the same thing, bought the aftermarket one and got screwed. Didn't work at all. PAid Autospeed like 3 hours of labor total from each oil change to get it working again. Just go to the stealership. I think OEM was $90.

Angry Meyle temp sensor does the same!!! OEM ftw?!?

note: The Meyle Germany oil temp sensor does the same thing as the Febi, straight out of the box. Turn the car off when hot then cycle the key, and bam the correct reading. Then the temp just falls back to lowest reading. I'm sending this thing back to Worldpac for a defective refund. My gauge had no reading at all before this install btw.

I have the same problem with the febi unit. I have a 2000 and it does not work. Looks like you have to put the oem one for it to work.
