    Clicking Sound

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
In the past 1.5 weeks or so, I noticed a slight clicking sound coming from the front of my car. It's always at low speeds, and usually when I'm turning...like in a parking lot. I don't feel anything through the steering wheel, I can just hear a slight clicking sound. I'm still under warranty and I'm probably going to call the dealership about it, but I was just wondering if anyone else has heard clicking in their front.

    Thanks...

I've had the same clicking noise for over three weeks now, finally got on my nerves enough that the dealer is changing out the left side axle that we think the noise is coming from for me.

That is what I thought too. Quattro has 8 CV joints I think. So changing the whole axle should fix it.

    Re: Clicking Sound

I had a clicking sound upon acceleration. We believe it is the engine hydraulic mounts going bad causing the tranny rear engine mount to skip as it is bad also.

Don't know until we fix it and try it. ANyone else here seen the hydraulic engine mounts go bad or leak?

No CO's 'yet'. The mechanic had it up on the lift and showed me the left side had a lot of play in it but the right side was solid, so that's their reasoning for swapping axles.

    Re: Clicking Sound

Well it's good to know it's on unmodified suspension cars as well. I guess that's why the dealer is replacing my cv joints or something to correct this noise.

I was told by the idiot that sold me my car that it was normal. And with him being a mechanic I believed him. Then my service tech told me it isn't and that he would get something replaced for me. Now I just have to wait for them to move to their new building, their ancient dinosaur hoists can't get under my car. lol

    Re: Clicking Sound

Mine still clicked with stock suspension. It hasn't affected driveability at all, far too many people have reported the same noise on their cars, and there is no TSB for any kind of clicking to my knowledge, so I have concluded that it's normal. I'm not too worried about it.

My driveability hasn't changed at all, it's just kind of annoying. I'm going to call the dealership and set up an appt. to have them look at it.

Also, I see you have an '08 GL550. Those things are SIICK! Made right here in Tuscaloosa. I drove just about every model of the ML, GL, and R-Class made here (including the ML63 and R63 AMG's) during my co-op. By far, my favorite car aesthetically was the GL550. Those things just look sick.

That's normal. All cars make noises after you turn them off. More so after a spirited drive.

    Re: Clicking Sound

Yeah, mine started approx. one year after getting my B7, just in time for AoA to no longer be required to fix it under warranty. I've taken it in a few times and the service guys have tried to figure out what's squeaking, they lube something and squeak/creak goes away but eventually returns. My guess is that it might be the bushings but no real way to determine . I hear it mostly when pulling out in reverse from a parked position (never locking the wheel in extreme right or left positions per the manual). My advice is to get it fixed (squeak free) before your first year is up since, like others have said, there is not a TSB and it does not affect drivability. Mostly annoying

    Re: Clicking Sound

It sounds like a CV joint going out, or you are hearing the High pressure fuel pump on top of the engine at low speeds ( its loud! )

When you take it to the dealership, tell them to check if there is an insulation PC missing from under your right front fender liner. It will cause noises too.

Let us know what they have to say.

And the GL is my dads work car. It indeed is a sick car. The transmission really bugs me though, it is too smart for its own good and won't shift when you lift throttle, or shift when you mash the gas and bog. I just don't like it.
I'm currently looking into some kind of control module for the air suspension, and try to convince him that it'd be useful for loading things into it.

It's definitely coming from the front wheel area, I mostly hear it on the driver's side...for obvious reasons.

Yea, the "cushy" Mercedes transmission is frustrating sometimes for the performance minded driver. All of the transmissions that go into those cars are basically the same (the diesel's are different I believe), just programmed differently. The trans that's in the ML63 and R63 is awesome. I used the paddles and dropped an ML63 into first getting onto an on-ramp, completely threw me in the seat and I was doing nearly 100mph before I merged (no traffic).

    Does your dad's GL550 have "distronic"...the radar-type cruise control?

    Re: Clicking Sound

I had a skoda in india with the same problem, (loud clicking noise on sharp turns and u turns). It was an axle problem for my car, they replaced them and things were back to normal.
if you are wondering WTF is Skoda then here ..it is also under VW and is the cheaper form of audi cars everywhere but america...i had an octavia and the fabia is their rally car. Check out their cars

Hey guys... I had the same clicking noise coming from the front passenger side. I bought her back to the dealer and it turns out to be the wheel bearing. Dealer replaced it under warranty.

Ok, so they're putting the new axle on and I got this 4x4 black on black S -line loaner today w/ paddle shifters, so slooow without the chip . I'll update tommorow if the noise is fixed and if everything is back to normal, then we'll definitely know if it was the CV going and maybe that'll help others with the same thing happening.

Ok so this blows big fat chunks. The new axle is in and I'm still getting the clicking noise, this is frikking irritating.. Anybody got any thing else I can tell them to check? I'll be putting stock wheels back on, just to eliminate that the sound is not coming from the fliks.

    Re: Clicking Sound

Yes yes, thank God. As you guys know they changed the axle the noise was apparently coming from and it still happened, well today they changed the wheel bearing for that afflicted side and lo and behold it stopped clicking, I was so happy. So I think that may also be the problem with you guys, also the tech said after he took it out he could not see any physical damage to the bearing or any reason it was malfunctioning and or any thing causing it to sound like that but since the noise is 'no more' like Sherlock Holmes said " If you erase all possible causes, anything which remains no matter how improbable is in fact the answer". Sorry about quoting Holmes. Let me know if I can help with anything else?

    Re: Clicking Sound

So I'm actually sitting at Tom Williams Audi in Irondale, AL right now for the clicking sound. After sitting here for 2.5 hours, the tech comes to the lobby and says "I don't hear it...". I made him and the service manager get in the car with me and drive around the parking lot. After about 5 "I don't hear it"'s from the tech, he finally says he heard something. It's clear as day to me...maybe because I drive it everyday? They just took my car back into the shop again. Who knows how long it'll be this time.

    Re: Clicking Sound

I get the same thing from my front right. I'm on H&R and bilstein sport suspension... Its annoying as hell because ill hear the noise for a day, then it goes away for several days, then ill hear it again. Unlike you guys I hear it mostly when im just going straight and slow like on my way home from work and keep hitting lights. Car drives the same, bumps dont seem any harsher, just the noise. I was originally thinking CV joints too but idk, I have a half day of work today so im actually gonna go and try to take a look if theres anything my nonmechanic eyes can spot on my own hah.... I noticed the sound more when im driving slow and press the gas and take it up to like 3k rpm in 2nd or 3rd hear, then release and coast.. it seems like when my car dips back a little because of acceleration and then levels back out after i release the gas that i can hear it.. But i cant always duplicate the sound. if there is very slight bumps on the road i seem to hear it more too....

I'm taking a 5 hour drive down to Ocean City next week and really dont want this to turn into a big problem while there and then be stranded but from what ive seen here a lot of people have this problem, even on stock suspension, and no one has had any serious problems with it yet.....?

I suspect control arm bushings. I know the TSB below is for a B6 but a lot of B7 S4 guys have been having this problem. I had it on my B6 and I suspect this is a lot of your problems as well. This is a known issue.

I've had this noise since last year, only when turning at slow speeds. I only hear it when the windows are down though. Audi Techs said it wasn't a problem and it hasn't been for the last year and a half or so. I guess if someone has a solution I will bug the service department.

Have the same problem. Any 3-point turns, U-Turns, right turns....always a click. Bringing it to my dealer tomorrow to get it checked out, and I will address all of the potential problems... Wish me luck!
