it's not just rogers, it's the agreement between apple and rogers, apple wants a cut of whatever the carriers make and for the carriers to make money they must raise the prices of their plans to compensate for the cut

It's a fact that Canadians pay way to much for wireless. We have one of the lowest usage rates out of industrialized nations... a sad fact considering we were world leaders only a short while ago. Blame Rogers, Bell and Telus.

Yes, they bought out the competition. Why do our governments allow this? It's just another monopoly thats allowed to continue. I don't know if it will help or not, but anyone reading this can they please sign this petition.

All cell phone companies sucks. Telus introduces fees for text messages *RECEIVED*. Bell follows, charging $0.15 per text message if you don't have a text messaging plan. I get a couple here and there for work, you expect me to get these reimbursed? Won't but I don't agree with it.

Yeah f*** them, I can wait until It's more affordable. My gilfriend and I wanted to get a familly cell phone plan... nothing under ~$160 a month. It's way to much. Not bending over this time!!!

Yes.. you are probably right, but I did hear of this on the 6 o'clock news and I googled Rogers/i-phone and got this protest letter. So I thought I would spread it best I could. I'm sticking with my shitty telus phone until more competition arrives. (with in the year supposedly)

Protest letters will just be thrown away... the best way to get a result out of any company is just NOT to buy their product. With all the hype about the iphone coming here with rogers and them introducing a package like this is kind of a slap in the face. If people don't buy their products or their services, they will be forced to lower prices.

p.s. the iphone is just a gimmick theres plenty of other phones out there on the market that are cheaper and perform better imo

It was introduced in BC way back then, called City Fido. $40 + tax per month. No monthly system access fee. I'm still subscribed to that plan!

I heard awhile back that the big three had to give access to their networks for several new carriers to get started up. Maybe there is hope...

Wishful thinking I think. A lot of the bigger carriers seems to be charging these smaller carriers who use their network a fairly sizeable fee which makes it difficult for them to stay for the long term. There's been some questionable acts by Bell when smaller ISPs using their network were complaining about cost and other restrictions (traffic shaping) that impacted their service that they were providing to their customers.

Government really needs to step in to regulate this market or force the carriers to adjust their pricing. A lot of the fees that we continue to pay were to help with the initial startup costs years ago but carriers have elected to continue passing this fee to consumers and collect it themselves.

I think it's funny that people are willing to buy the IPhone and pay the ridiculously high plan when they can get it unlocked and keep it with their current plan, not have to go back on contract. I've had mine that I bought in the states when they started selling only the 8GB model and it does everything I want it to do, I use the internet when I'm at home or work on Wifi for free and I pay the same I paid with my other phone and I'm not on contract

That maybe the case with the current iPhone. Granted that the new iPhone 3G will be cracked (rule #1: if it's locked down, it'll be cracked and hacked), the process of getting a 3G is vastly different from the first gen.

Previously you were able to get an iPhone in the US. You could later sign up with a contract with AT&T and go from there. Or not. Then get the iPhone unlocked and use it with another carrier. Because of this, AT&T lost a lot of money since they were subsidizing the cost of the iPhone so the process changed with the 3G. When you get a 3G you must get it activated immediately, so that means, signing up for a two year contract (AT&T) or a three year contract (Rogers). IF you cancel the contract, you'll pay a penalty of course PLUS you need to return the iPhone... you can't keep the iPhone.

AT&T is going to sell the iPhone, for $400. Whether I think $400 is reasonable or not is a different question. It'll be locked of course to their network but eventually it'll be unlocked. Whether Rogers will do this or not remains to be seen.

That's the problem with how the cell phone industry works in North America. Carriers subsidize the cost of the cell phone and thus to make sure that they recover this cost plus make a few more bucks on top, people are locked into contracts for a couple of years and the phones themselves locked.

I've had my iphone running on Fido since my contract expired in September. I like the phone and it has kept me more organized. Heck my wife is inputing appointments into hers, where as before it was on a scrap piece of paper somewhere in the house. I agree the prices are crazy for data plans, but I just use the wifi where ever I find it available so I don't pay these goons for a data plan. I'm currently on a couples plan I've had for 3 years(expired) and I pay $80 for both accounts, voicemail, call display, unlimited incoming, free calls between couples, free weekends and 200 weekday minutes. It works for me since most of my calls are incoming from clients.

Got an iphone from the US in Dec, had it unlocked and jailbroken. Stuck my sucky Roger's sim card and I have a working iphone without edge. Everything wireless is done through wifi.

Fido has an unlimited data plan for an extra 15.00. Now I can switch carriers without changing numbers, I am seriously considering this. However, since Rogers owns Fido, I am afraid that the plan might be canceled or they will ask for what type of phone I have and... you get the picture.

So it's status quo for now.

Funny aside: I called Roger's tech support for the new voicemail number and when the dude asked what kind of phone I am using, I said, "Motorola DynaTAC 8000X". Pause, here is new number.

It's not that simple, everything is not black and white for some people a cell phone is a necessary, for you it's not and that's cool. I haven't had a home phone in 5 years and I probably never will and for me that works but for you it wouldn't. I know the 3G is locked and now you're required to activate the phone right away and at the apple store in the US you now can only buy it with a credit card so that they can track the purchase path of the phone and whether it's activated or not. The thing I'm saying is why they would put such strict rules on it in Canada when I'm sure there are tons or unlocked floating on the street, PMall, ebay that wouldn't require the buyer to lock in to a contract and a crazy ass data plan I know the new gen has many new functions but mine works great for what I need it to do and I'm not on contract so it's greeat for me.

The Fido $15 is for wap browsing, wouldn't work with non fido phones, you might get charged and i believe the iphone is full html now wap..... like many ppc

problem with the newer iphones is not the unlock, it's the activation of the phones, before you were able to purchase them and activate them via itunes @ home = you can unlock it urself or @ a shop, all the newer ones requires the activation to be done @ a dealer

and since the dealer won't sell without a contract you are stuck with signing up to get the phone

Apple will sell the iPhone without contract. $599 USD for the 8gb and $699 USD for the 16 gb. It's kind of expensive but then if you look at all those other smart phones (that we don't get here unless you go to Pacific Mall or FMP) it's about the same price. It's actually cheaper if you look at the amount of flash memory that it comes with. But those are US prices, hopefully it will be the same for us.

the i phone is nice, except for the fact that there is no key board. For shit like texting, dialing, emails ect it really bothers me when i dont ahve a full keyboard at my fingertips. In another year (next july) i bet apple will have the 3ed gen iphone and hopefully that one will have the pull out keyboard (like the new HTC touch Pro) Until then i wont get an i phone because my htcs621 with windows mobile 6.1 kicks ass!

Well they are already here with network offerings for computers, so the next step would be the cell market,BUT they were here already as a percentage owner of Rogers awhile back. So who knows.

Reasons I like my iphone
1) wifi connection to surf or check emails
2) ipod with video and audio
3) the number of neat apps that people make for it, free
4) Google maps, very handy when looking for a Tim's near by,lol
5) When I pull the phone out in front of others, people say"um is that the iphone, I heard it doesn't work up here in Canada"

I myself am thinking of picking up an HTC touch pro to replace my iPhone. It is rather expensive though. I'm still debating between that or an RNSE for the car.

Touch Diamond is going to be very similar to the Touch where it's advertised as Triband

if you look @ the band selection menu on the phone, 850mhz is available, wait for a few more radio upgrades and you will have a quadband diamond

Touch Pro.. ewww.. the diamond is advertised as being small with full feathers and a VGA screen, getting the thicker Touch Pro, I might as well get the cheaper TyTN II or the Xperia X1 which is also manufacturered by HTC (640x480 screen rumored)
