    AeroCatch hood pins

Well I decided to order a set for my car and just got done installing them yesterday. Wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. Using a CF/FG cuting bit made it really easy cutting the opening.

Yes, into nuts that are place on the inside of the hood.

    Re: AeroCatch hood pins

I keep putting off doing this because it looks somewhat hard. I guess more accurately, it looks easy to screw up. I've heard cutting CF is no fun because it splinters. How long did installation take you? I would put mine same place, but oriented slightly differently (I assume you did yours as such because of the vents).

About 1 hr of actual work time.

Since I already had standard hood pins on the car I already had a location for the pins but I actually ended up moving them forward about 1 inch so that the new hood pin body would be on a flat surface and not end up touching the duct that is in my hood.

I installed the hood pin and then cut a hole above the pin so I could see it. I then took the templet that is include in the kit and placed it on the hood. Now that I have done this I know that since the hood is not perfectly flat, you need to offset the cross hairs that are on the templet because once the body is placed into the hood the opening for the pin is slightly off. I just ended up making an oval hole for the pin so I could adjust it to line up with the body.

I then just took the templet and drew along the outer edge so that I could cut out a larger opening so I could install the small locking nuts onto the allen head bolts.

Yes CF can splinter if you try cutting it with a normal cutting wheel, I used a dremel bit that is designed for cutting fiber glass. It cut the CF like it was butter and made it easy to cut right along the black sharpy line I had drawn onto the CF hood.

BTW if your looking to install them in the exact same spot I installed mine, there is a area on the stock radiator support that is boxed in with supports that connect the top section of the radiator support to the bottom part. This spot is located just above the head light.

    Re: AeroCatch hood pins

I plan on putting them about where you have yours, or maybe further out towards the edge of the hood. I will probably have to mock it up and look at it in person once I have the pins.

Good to hear there is a template, would have to get dremel and bit for cutting fiber glass. I just worry about messing up the hood. Beyond that, it looks like its easy to mess up the actual pin alignment/angle.

Based on the fact this only took you and hour, how much do you think a body shop would charge to do something like this? If its only 80-100 bucks or so, I might feel better having them do it.

Not sure how much a body shop would charge.

Well if you get the placement of the body close to where you need it you can always move the pin placement a little.

Just like a normal hood pin, but instead of the pin coming up thru the hood it sits below it and then a rod goes thru a hole in the pin. So when the latch is closed it is flat with the surface of the hood.

You can see the pin in the center of the body in this picture.

Because it was the only flat surface. Even their site says to mount them straight or at a 45 deg angle and there is no way to mount them straight because the hood rounds down just in front of the pin location.

As you can see in this picture, there isn't enough room to mount it staright forward with the small end forward because the hood rounds down once you get in front of the radiator support.

Also the hood pins are designed to use the air flow as you are driving the car to keep the hood pin locked into place if the flap opens, if you mount it backwards the flap will be forced backwards by the air causing the rod to come out from the hood pin.

I think they look better slanted, looks more streamlined.

Straight mounted may look better on a more angular car.

Yes because you mounted the pin much closer to the fender which allowed you to mount it back further. Your missing one big thing though Rob, I already had holes for normal hood pins on this hood which were also used on my Vorsteiner hood. I also had to work around the ducts on this hood so I was not able to put then in straight like you did. Plus my car is actaully used for running at 140+ mph not sitting at car shows, so how the hood pins looked wasn't a huge issue.

LOL is my car a show car now? I go 130+ all the time Just because I don't track it on the straight line ( I run the road course...it has turns...) doesn't mean its a "show car". Why didn't you get yourself a Mustang if all you do is run it down the 1/4?

Gosh I can't wait to meet you at waterfest. Are you always this defensive in person?

Gosh I can't wait to meet you at waterfest. Are you always this defensive in person?

Yeah because I am always talking about YOU Rob. All I said is that my car is NOT a show car so it wasn't like I needed to have the hood pins perfectly straight which you seem to act like they need to be, my hood pins do one thing and that is keep the hood on my car seeing that I dont use a OEM latch.

Yeah because a "mustang" is the only thing that is considered a drag car, that would be like telling you to sell your A4 and buy a miata to road race.

Odd because the last time I check all of the big Audi/VW events like Waterfest include drag racing but yet none of them include road racing" anymore.

BTW you might not want to post pics from a car show if you dont want people to call it a "show car". I mean come on your judging sheet is in the window in that picture, you have big heavy wheels on it and when did "door shaving" become a road racing mod?

So your telling me that every car at local shows are 'show cars'? That's nonsense because all the local shows here are about bbq, beer, and a laid back fun afternoon. Yes I love to attend shows

Yes my wheels are heavy, god your observant. They are my daily wheels- NOT my track wheels. I have a set of 17x9 ronals & a non shaved driver door I put on for the track.

Yes my door are shaved. It is a complete show mod. Is there something wrong with having a clean shaved style? No. Just like you plan to paint the center of your hood. Is that a show mod mike? No its for style.

My opinion of a show car is someone who takes the time to wax behind their bumpers, undercarriage, fender liners, and under the hood. They usually have a dedicated set of wheels for shows only. They only drive their show car onto a trailer usually going to a repair shop or car show. My car has NEVER seen a trailer, or dedicated wheels. Hell, I drive my car through the salty winters here in Minnesota.

Who is the one telling someone that they installed it wrong because it doesn't match what they did on a virgin hood and you say I dont know the difference between a hole in the ground and their own ass.

Sure I know the difference, my ass is the one that has 600whp under it instead of 250.

Not like my car wouldn't do circles around your car road racing, isn't hard to figure out that a lighter car making twice the power isn't going to be quicker be it turning or going in a straight line.

Yeah, but I would still charge a good amount to do the work on someone elses car because I would have to buy a new hood if I mess up.

You know how it goes, you dont know how hard/easy something is till you do it.

LOL, I wasn't the one saying they were right that would be you seeing that you basically told me that I installed mine wrong because they dont sit straight forward.

Yeah because driving a 600whp A4 on the streets of CA is the "smart" thing to do. Sorry but I am not willing to risk losing my car just to drive it at 35 mph on the streets. Your car wouldn't last 30 minutes on the streets near my house before a cop pulled you over and told you to open the hood, then a little later you can stand there feeling stupid as they tow it away.

Just heard from them the other day, hood is done and the trunk should be finished mid next week. One of the shops had some cars catch on fire next to the building, so Fiber Images had to close for a few days because their shop filled up with smoke. This put a hold on all of their orders for about a week.
