My car is in for the 35k sercive. Audi called me and my inspection ended in june. So they said in order to pass inspection i need 2 new rear tires...i didn't think they matered for inspections!?!?!? They are low but def not bald..Also my front are the stock Eagle tires but they said they are backordered for a long long time so they were gonna toss continentals on there...will the thread be the same?(sorry i do not have numbers ect..) but is this normal for them to say because my friend said if i dont do the inspection they will "tag it". Also will it be very noticable the front tires are diff from the back? But all in all a $185 35k service turned into $591 $185 for service/$21 for inspection/ $325 for tire/balance/ect

ummm, that sucks, I think you might want to pull the trigger and get all 4 because of the quattro! you dont want really different tread on all your tires!

Yeah I have seen that happen. Audi wants you to get the new tires, but if you go to an independant shop for an inspection, they will probably let it go depending on how worn the treads are.

According to the state inspection requirements, there are acceptable levels of wear they can allow, but that can be subject to interperatation. When my Murano went in for inpection the front tires were shot and it passed anyway!

You're stuck, sort of. They won't let you leave without failing you now, but it's better than spending money on dealership labor for those tires. So just have them fail you, leave, get your tires somewhere else and get passed at a small shop somewhere.

And Quattro won't mind your tread differences. You could be running on the cords of the rear tires, and it wouldn't be a great enough rotating difference to upset it.

If the front tires aren't very new either I would just get a whole new set. You are not supposed to mix and match to make a set.

Front tires are in great shape i had to get new ones due to a bump in one tire and a unrepairable flat on the other so they are only a few months old where as the rears were since i bought the car

You can mix and match tires if you want. Just be aware that the driving characteristics vary from tire to tire. Chances are you'll never notice it while driving though unless you put Blizzaks in the back and G-Force T/A's up front or something.

This is a little trick that inspection stations use to get you to buy tires from them. They say "oh just put it on the same card as the inspection fee?"

They tried to do this to me on my 02 Jetta. I demanded the keys and told them to take the car off the lift. I took the car to Pep Boys and bought new Hankook Ventus, which are one of the best all season tires for the price, 79.00 a peice. They handle better and are quieter than comprable $200 Pirelli's and Dunlops.

The exact same setup happened to me for my Land Rover Discovery. They noticed that the rear tires tread were worn out (they were) and told me that they could only pass me if I purchased and mounted two new tires. Don't fall for it. Its partially a scam because they charge you an extremely inflated price for the tires. However they do have a right to fail you because it doesnt meet the 50 or whatever point inspections that must be passed before giving the sticker.

I reccomend you try to go to a gas station that does inspections and try to see if you can pass there and then order a set of rear tires on tirerack or edgeracing.com for better prices... Good luck dude...

order your own tires... the conti's suck. independent shop will do it for cheaper... if 2 are bad... i am wondering why the other 2 aren't if you have been rotating you tires properly.

As i recall when i lived in VA, it was a 54 point inspection deal i think when i was turning wrenches backed there. I loved state inspections because it brings out the honesty and safety for people, well at least in my perspective whenever i recieved a state inspection car. VA law on tire depth was 3/32nd or 4/32nd was the minimum for tire's. I would rather have state inspection than to have smog. Im more worried about people's safety than the smog levels because if you saw the cars out here in cali, you would be worried as well.
