    Pop Goes the Tranny?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So last night I was shifting from 1st to 2nd the engine was at about 6000rpm lol. I ground 2nd really bad it was almost like the clutch didn't work. Now if I am gearing down into second and it is a fast down shift it grinds as well. The shifter is really tight too going from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st???????? Am I just to admit that the syncro is done for or could it be my clutch(stock) messed and possibly damaged my shift linkage making it tight to shift???????

Could be all of those, could just be you may need to change the transmission fluid. Also, get a JHM shifter

    Re: Pop Goes the Tranny?

dont get a fucking JHM shifter. jesus christ whats with everyone saying get a short shifter for anything transmission related? what if my clutch starts to slip i should get a JHM shifter too? its a great product and all, but you people need some knowledge dropped on you.

to the OP, its probably not your clutch. it more than likely is a synchro. have a transmission shop or another shop you trust look at it and see whats going on. then work from there. and then maybe instead of buying a JHM short shifter you can buy a JHM transmission rebuild kit and whatever else you may need on top of that.

if it is tight to shift between 1 and 2 then chances are its the 1-2 slider. grinding is due to worn snycros

oh it must likely is. if one of the two go, chances are the other will go soon there after because they rely on one another.

your clutch cant mess up your shift linkage but your linkage may have come loose, so check that out

I'll have to have a look around. So we are talking about the slider inside the trans being damaged? Also I am sure the syncros are bad as well cause the clutch doesn't slip. What should I expect a shop to charge if I drop off the tranny to them to fix the sliders and the syncros???????

i am actually in the same situation. but, i did not grind really bad into 2nd. mine just developed over time. i was quoted 6-7 hours of labor at my local audi dealer plus parts depending on what i need.

I would say that the synchros and/or 1-2 shift collar have seen the end.

Jordan you got a PM. I will pull the tranny and get her back in order as soon as possible. Kind of a piss off but now I can put in my Vast Stg3 Clutch and LWFW and know the trans is perfect. I am gonna set the car on low boost and run her easy till I get all the parts.

Cool, I just happened to install the shifter yesterday, and love it so I figured that I would mention it to him if he ends up fixing the problem, though he probably already has an aftermarket shifter. I didn't mean that getting a shifter would magically fix anything at all. My apologies for not being too clear on that...

I say start with transmission fluid, and hope for the best

    Re: Pop Goes the Tranny?

I did a tranny flush about 4 months ago and put Royal Purple Syncromesh in it so I doubt that is it. It shifts perfect in all other gears. I did notice today that it is hard to move the shifter over from the 1st and 2nd slot to the 3rd 4th slot but once you get the shifter moved over it slides into 3rd and 4th fine.
