Not owning any of them, I test drove the Evolution X, 9, and B6 S4. The Evo X had less lag and felt smoother and much better handling, not as frenetic as the Evo9. Loved the B6 S4 for it's immediate power in all gears.
The difference is the cost to mod. Tuners are just starting to offer ecu reflash for the EvoX, which is about $1K max, and that should easily get about an extra 100 awhp with a catback exhaust, or a mid 12 second 1/4 mile.

The stock EvoX also goes .99g on the skidpad and about 73 mph in the slalom with the new S-AWC system (yaw control, active center differential, etc.)
TIP, a Evo tuner shop, just got 337.2 awhp with 321 awtq from a beta chip and boost controller - everything else stock on the EvoX.
I've discovered, if you do want to go EvoX, this dealer in CostaMesa, CA (Southcoast Mitsubishi) undercuts everyone by thousands, w/a base GSR 5 spd for about $29,999 new. I'm still undecided, but like the fit and finish of the B6 S4 more, but a new GSR with warranty for a just a little more money?

Yes, the MR EvoX's are more money, about $7-8K more than the 5 spd.
