    Jack stands location

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey. I'll be replacing the snub mount on my car...I hope this would remedy my "vibrations while idling" problem. Now I 'm going to place jack stands on lef tand right side so I can safely work underneath. But where do I place them..I'm thinking the same spot where owner's manual recommend I place the OE jack?...

Alright thanks. I have an idea where the jack point might be, but to validate my assumption, does anyone have pics of where this jack point might be??

    Re: Jack stands location

there is a little "notch" along the side rails that does NOT have plastic encasing it....that is where the jack point is.

If you put that jacks at all four corners (right behind the front wheels, and right in front of the rear wheels) you will be fine.....dont be so anal, lol

Yeah I'm not trying to to be anal. Just being a little more cautious I guess since I've read of threads about how others have damage they're vehicle b/c they place the stands in the wrong spot or even worse, the car collapsed on them...yikes!

That's why the ramps would make sense, Pepboys have a set on sale for $29.99. No jack points, no jacking the vehicle up first, just drive up and go. Albeit, I can't wait until my friend get's his lift working in his garage at home! LOL

yeah ramps are much safer. just be careful driving up them cause they can slip out on slick concrete. I put mine on top of a towel.

If I don't have the aluminum low profile jack, I use the widow-maker to lift a little bit before using a normal floor jack.
I couldn't use ramps unless I took off the Oetty Front. That's why I sold my ramps after 1 use.

To prevent driving over the ramps (I've seen the thread and pics... not pretty), measure the length of the ramp and place a 4x4 block of wood that far ahead of your rear tyres. Worked like a charm when I did my last oil change.

Harbor Freight has a good low profile jack that will get underneith slammed B6's with body kits. Just need a spacer between the jacking points so the jack is jacking on an even plane. I use a 5" piece of full squared construction unistrut.

That is a REALLY GOOD tip for Ramp Noobies!
I ended up dragging a crappy mirror from my house and angled it with a brick so i could see the front wheels...
It worked but a brick to the back wheel would've been pretty much the same thing.

I used my ramp all the time for my TRD Toyota Tacoma, which is raised much higher than our cars, so it is harder to see where you are at on the ramp. I don't get why people are having problems with this?

    ramps for the win!

also a stiffer snub mount is going to transfer MORE vibration to the car, not reduce it unless the current one is all cracked and toast.

So wait, the APR snub mount would give more vibration? Should I wait until my old one cracked? My car hardly vibrates at all, it is still at idle, shifting is a bit rough, but I thought it was because I just getting used to the clutch on this car. However, after two weeks of driving, I'm thinking it may be something else.

    Re: Jack stands location

a stiffer mount will transfer more vibraition, where a softer one will absorb more of the vibraition rather then transferring it to the car.

If you have a vibraition issue a stiffer snub mount isn't going to fix it, only make it more noticeable.

Does your accessory belt tensioner "bounce" when the car is idling?

Not that I know of. Again, it is smooth at idle, almost as if the engine was dead.

oh, i'm sorry, i thought you were the original poster who said "I hope this would remedy my "vibrations while idling" problem."

if adjusted correctly you will be just fine. I have the APR, less engine slop.

as for the original poster, solve the vibraition issue before installing the snub because it won't fix your issue.

Less engine slop? Hmmm. that may be worth it. I think the dealer replaced mine without indicating it on the work order (CPO), it idles smooth, but a little rough on engagement.

Well, I've been having this problem since I got the car. No CELs, coil packs and spark plugs are new, vacuum hoses replaced. Pretty much everything that's suggested by fellow B6 owners. A new suggestion I discovered was check valves and snub mount. I figured I start with the snub mount since it's easy to fix. But what else do you think I should look into??

Like others said the jacking points are on the pinch welds. Do not use ramps. My buddy drove over them and it wasn't good. I don't blame you for double checking. My dad went to change a spare when he had his passat and ended up needing body work because he didn't use the jack point.

Amazing how a thread titled 'Jack Stands Location' turns into a convo about snub mounts when there's a recent one going basically alongside.

    Ummmm... ya.

to change mount you do not need to ramps or jack stands- only if you are not lowered.

How the hell do you drive over ramps? especially with a quattro car! an audi has to be the easiest car to drive up on ramps... its AWD so you can ease up them, rear wheels arent spinning, front wheels arent yanking the ramps under the car, just ease it on up and they (all i have seen) have a nice dip/wheel area to keep you from doing exactly that! dont blame the product, its clearly an operator problem!

i guess that would depend on the size of the person doing to work ;) but yeah, you can reach what you need to swap it out if you don't mind it being a little tight.

I asked that earlier, no one responded. I use to get my Tacoma up ramps and it sat way higher, harder to see, than the Audi. Are some folks rushing or lacking some basic driving skills?

seriously! i can see how a RWD would be tricky on a slick garage floor or a FWD can jerk the stands under the car but a AWD??? come on... just ease up it! and the ramps that i have, have a 2-3" dip and a lip to keep the car from going over even if u jumped up on it... must be your suggestion, lack of driving skillZ
