    car carrier towing...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm moving and need to tow my 2006 A4 quattro, but according to the penske truck rental site, they have my car listed as being able to tow but not with 18 inch wheels. I have the stock s-line 18" wheels. They list 265 60 R17 as being the largest size wheel/tire that can be towed. Will my car not fit on the carrier or can I still tow it? If the car fits, would it be too dangerous to tow?

    Anyone have experience with this?

more as a comment for other readers of this thread and a possible reminder to the OP, any Quattro-equipped vehicle must be carried on a flatbed and cannot be towed by a standard tow truck (with two tires spinning on the road).

    so says the manual.

It's not your wheels you have to worry about, it's quattro which means no towing.

    Re: car carrier towing...

I know all wheels have to be off the ground with quattro. I'm getting a flatbed carrier, not a tow dolly. They say on their website that any car with 18" wheels is too large for a flatbed carrier...

Has anyone towed their car on a carrier with 18" wheels or larger?

the overall diameter and width of the stock 18" wheel/tire setup are almost identical to the stock 17" wheel/tire setup.
in other words, the diameter of a 235/40/18 tire is pretty much the same as a 235/45/17 tire and both have 235 mm width as well.
I highly doubt you'll have any problems.

That's what I thought. I just wasn't sure why they list on their tire chart that it's not within their limitations.

Probably the same reason why Crutchfield.com thinks that we don't have double-din dash openings.

Try Fed Ex. I had them transport my car from NJ to Southern California. Great experience.

    Re: car carrier towing...

I just towed my car a few thousand miles on a flatbed trailer with my 19's on and had no problem. It was a buddies trailer so it may not be exactly the same size as the one you're currently looking at but it should work just fine. I have the cupra splitter installed so I had to put some thick logs under the back so when I put the ramps down to drive my car on and off the splitter wouldn't get ripped off with the ramps.

give it a test fit. call them and tell them you want to try it out. I have no idea why 18 would be too bit.
