    Inner electric fan

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My inner electric fan does not cut on. When I have the AC on, on a hot day the car will begin to rise above normal (2 notches) when I am not moving. If I turn the AC off the coolant temp will return to normal. I don't have a service manual yet, does anyone know where the relay is for the fan motors? I saw some relays on the drivers side, but they aren't labeled. Any suggestions??

    Re: Inner electric fan

thats the afterrun fan, do the blue temp sensor swap and it will come on after the car is off for about 3 minutes. it wont come on unless its around 120 degrees out without changing the sensor.

    Re: Inner electric fan

I'm assuming you mean engine temperature. This is normal for it to rise for a short period until you can get moving again.

Did you search? Maybe you did, but you didn't find anything because your terms are all skewed. Let me help you.

What is this "blue temp sensor swap"?

I run elf 5w40 and next time I'm probably going to do 0w40 mb1. I have only owned the car for 3k. I find that my oil temp usually runs around 225 or less, only goes up to 250 if it has been run hard in hot temps for long amount of time or it sits idling in hot temp (over 90) with ac on. It scares me that that the engine oil will get that high, but at least I can just turn off the AC.

You are talking about the fan that is BEHIND the radiator. It only runs with the A/C (except if the engine temp passes a certain threshold, iirc). There are a few possible things that could be causing this.

    1. The fan itself is bad
    2. Fan control module is bad
    3. A/C temp switch is bad (connects to condenser under pass. headlight)

Let me ask you this, when the A/C is on does the after-run fan kick on? (fan unit in FRONT of condenser/radiator, just behind the front bumper) If so, that means that the control module is working and trying to use the after-run fan to compensate for the loss of the A/C fan. If the after-run fan is not on you may have a faulty control module.

You can also test the fan itself by unplugging it and directly applying 12v to it to see if it will turn on (apply for no more than 5 sec).

I had this same issue and ended up replacing the A/C fan. They are expensive brand new (~$230) so I would suggest looking for a used unit. I was able to use a fan from a '00 A4 that I cut the plug from and reconnected the S4 plug to the wire.

Feel free to PM or email with further ?s.

Yes the outer fan (condenser) comes on when I turn on the AC, but the inner doesn't ever come on. I was hoping maybe it was a relay. But maybe I'll try testing it tonight, it looks to be a bitch to get to.

The fan can be removed without pulling the front end and the connections are beside the power steering reservoir.

    Re: Inner electric fan

Thanks, I've been checking prices @ the dealer. It's $230 for my wholesale/friend discount.

I'm going to test it tonight though.

When you test make sure you have the right plug. I can walk you through it if need be.

There was someone here selling one but like I said, you can adapt an A4 fan to fit. Check some of the eBay stores for a used unit.

Let me know if you need any part numbers or if I can help out any further.
