    Coil Pack Install/Question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I blew two coil packs this weekend. CEL came on and I'm reading codes P0300, P0304, and P0306.

I went to Audi of Tysons this morning and picked up 2 new coilpacks at $43.33 a piece. Tried to pull them out myself and change them, but haven't had any luck. Is there something special I need to know about the 3.0 engine (B6)?

Also...the guy at the dealership said I should change all six at the same time or they will keep blowing like a domino effect, anybody agree with that?

I'm actually having more trouble getting them away from the engine.

They are in their pretty tight and can't get a good grip...any special tool needed to pry them up?

not that I know off, perhaps a flat head screw driver and a small block of wood for leverage

    Re: Coil Pack Install/Question

How about changing all 6 at one time...do people with 1.8T's change all 4 at once?

I guess it could just be preference.

    Re: Coil Pack Install/Question

you can get them really cheap online man. I think I payed $100ish for 4.

once you take of the two bolts holding them in they should just pop right out. like pondside said try a flat head to help you out...

    Re: Coil Pack Install/Question

i changed only 1 when it blew, and have been fine for almost a year now. i do carry a spare in the trunk. if u can wait till wednesday and make it out to the tysons meet, i can help u out. but like pondside said, its pretty much unclip and pull straight out.

it may take a bit of effort, but its as simple as pulling straight out. i used a flathead for leverage, and gloves help a bit if ur motor is still hot.

klum00: the boltdowns were only the b5's. b6s/b7s have the cp's that u just pop in and out.

I looked at the bolt and can't tell what pattern that is...anybody know?

I mean I just tried again to just pull it straight out and don't feel it budging at all really.

    Re: Coil Pack Install/Question

The bolt/screw I'm seeing isn't near the actual coilpack, but more along the line that runs along all the coilpacks. I guess you could say keeping them all together?

Is it necessary to remove that?

Yeah I'm all about getting them cheaper online, but my car has been running like this since Saturday and don't really have time to wait for the shipping, etc.

Where should I apply the pressure with the flat head?

Flat head screw driver should work for you. You don't need a special tool. From reading the threads you should replace all at the same time. That way they are all new and installed at the same time.

Reading the DIY it looked like you pull them from the engine first, then undo the clip...

Do I undo the clip first?

I can't figure this shit out....got the coil pack lifted up partially but it won't go any further...it's connected to red "piping" and it won't move...

Anybody in the B6 world have a DIY for the 3.0?

    Re: Coil Pack Install/Question

Your coil pack looks like this...

Different color for your than the 1.8 but same design... it just pulls out if the connector is removed like this picture

    Re: Coil Pack Install/Question

Yeah I see the coil pack, no issue there. The problem is getting it away from the clip since their is absolutely no budge or room to pull it away from the clip.

I really feel like I need to unscrew something to loosen things up a bit.

    Re: Coil Pack Install/Question

On mine there are these push in wire holders every couple inches that you can pop out and push back in... try gently pulling those up to give you more room to disconnect the coilpack..

    Re: Coil Pack Install/Question

I may opt to take it to the dealership since I only have 25K miles on the car...has anybody around the area had luck getting these replaced under warranty?

If so, how should I word it to the service dept.? Just tell them I have two coilpacks failing?

They will scan your car and replace them at cost I believe, they aren't covered under the warranty IIRC.. I could be wrong though

    Re: Coil Pack Install/Question

Coil packs are covered under factory warranty and CPO if you have. Warranty will only replace the bad pack though, not all 6. I had one go, then another a month later, none since. So if you want to do some preventive maintenance its at your cost. I'm under CPO now so when they went I just paid outright cuz part and labor was $45 each time vs. $50 deductible for CPO warranty.
