I heard a knocking coming from the rear, jacked the car up and listened as I turned the driveshaft with my hand while car was out of gear. That clunking noise was coming from the rear diff so now I need a new one. I have a 2002 but im pretty sure as long at it's a manual, 5 speed, b6 it will work. Please let me know before I trade this thing in!

sorry, I have no rear diff to sell, but can you explain better what you did to check the rear diff?

What sound are we trying to listen for?

    THANKS!

Re: wtb: b6 5 speed rear differential!

Its a "thump" noise, when i'm turning (90 degree angle) and accelerating at lower speeds is when I hear the noise. I would say about 2 thumps per second untill the car straightens back out. The diff is not leaking, the axles and constant velosity joints seems to be new, no tears or chips in them. Sway bar/links are not broken and I found nothing loose in the back. It sounds as if it's coming from the center rear and there is a very slight vibration associated with it.
