    Brand Question

I'm changing my oil and Air filter today. I only use Castrol 10w40 full snyth, but I have a question on brand of oil and air filters. How much of a difference is it? I can get fram cheap, is it good enough, does brand ACTUALLY make a difference? I mean the K&N air filter is 52, and the fram is only 12 bucks.

    Re: Brand Question

Use Canstrol 5W40 (This is the right weight of oil for your engine and good for the summer heat when temperatures and pressure of the oil is different than in winter.

    Brand matters...Yes

Audi chooses OEM filters by the oil flow rate, pressure and capacity required in the motors. Companies like Fram copy that design but use cheaper filtration materials etc. OEM MANN or Mahle Filters are way to go.

Use this place to buy any filter you desire...

    Re: Brand Question

Fram makes OEM filters for Honda. Last time I checked, honda has a pretty good rep as far as quality goes. I would have NO problem using Fram filters in my car. I have done it for years on numerous 1.8t's as well as all my honda's. People that tell you Mann or Mahle are the only options are wrong.

On a side not Rennart told my friend last week that her car was leaking oil because she had a Fram oil filter on it. They said it happens all the time with them and that she needed the $11 Mann one they sell. They said it had nothing to so with the oil change she got 3 days earlier. I told her to get the car out of that hack shop and bring it to me. I brake cleaned around the filter and haven't had any issues since.

People just talk down about Fram cause its not OEM. Save the money and just don't bring it up on here. The online gestapo will learn you for not doing what everyone else does.

    Re: Brand Question

Use OEM air filter. And here is a list of Audi/VW approved motor oils. But what is not on that list is what most people would agree you should use which is Amsoil, Royal Purple, Motul, or Red Line.

Yes I have. If someone is not a complete retard, and they change oil regularly, they should have no problem.

I'll flip your question to you....Can you show me what the inside of a Mann or Mahle look like? Aside from them being an OEM supplier, I have never seen info that tells me why they are head and shoulders above everyone else.

Wow, thanks for the info. Nothing that would scare me away from using Fram, but definitely informative. I wonder if anything has changed since 99?

    Re: Brand Question

I've cut apart various filters last year to compare and Fram's construction is subpar when compared to a mahle/mann or an Audi.

Wix is much better than Fram.

someone who wants to use a fram on their car, fine by me but i'll stick with OEM. I would rather use a WIX if i'm not using OEM they are good filters too.

I have a bunch laying around i may cut em up and snap some photos to show everyone if their is enough interest.

It will be just around 4.5 quarts. I put in little over 4 at first and then top it off later after it all settles after the first drive.

You can stock up on filters from that site and if you spend $50 its free shipping.

    Re: Brand Question

its not so much the brand but the OEM filters are much larger than the generic filters they supply for our cars at the local auto store.

Frams are complete crap. They don't have the correct anti-drainback valve and have been known to burst.

To be fair the cost to me is the same for fram or German. If I buy 10 of those mann it cost the same as what CT charges for the fram.
