I usually do mine while it is running (with a fine mist). This way you can also tell if water gets where it should not be. Car would start acting funny.

I have never had any issue.

no, an engine is (or should be) water tight. Cars are driven in the rain and winter, and the engine compartment is not sealed from the elements.

A gentle spray is not likely to force water into electrical connections or sealed components. I wouldn't trust a pressure washer in the engine compartment though.

Props! Engine bay cleaning is a fine art as I've come to be aware of.. and it always looks like shit if you miss even tiny spots. I hope I can get mine as clean as yours.

Just want to share my .02 cents for the b6s4 engine...

had a high end detailer do my car when I first got it, next day had 2 blown coil packs and a burnt out starter relay. Just make very sure your detailer (or you) isn't overdoing it...

    what's the engine cover kit?

the whole engine cleaning thing kills me. what's the point? I guess if you're showing or selling your car, it makes good sense, but is there any other point? I know it looks nice clean, but I almost never get my head under there to notice it, so meh.

Further, some engine parts have covers, so you clean/wash the covers, but not underneath the covers. I have a cover for my whole engine ...it's called a hood.

its good to clean the whole engine of salt from the roads, dirt , dust, grime, your belts will last longer, your hoses will not crack and so on.

I would do it 2 times a year.

ditto, most times it's the elements that degrade such things, just like paint, if it's left dirty from bird cra* and 'stuff' it will eventualy eat away at the paint.

to add to that, its a good idea to spray all hoses with silicone spray to prolong their life (just like with door seals), some owners manuals mention it as part of the service.
the B5 S4 is like the mafia... there is only one way out!
