    Cylinder Misfires

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Went to Advanced Auto this morning for the check engine light and the codes came up as cylinder misfires for all 4 cylinders. Person there said it might be the spark plugs or the wires. Wondering if anyone had this before and had some advice on it. Thanks

    Re: Cylinder Misfires

I get misfire codes all the time. I cant keep my check engine light off if I had to unless I run low boost and timing. And I have changed plugs and coil packs and get them still so doubt that will do anything for you. It isn't a big deal though.

K, I am taking it to someone nearby who has a Vag. See what we will find. That check engine light is annoying. I have to get it fixed. That's all I stare at when driving besides the road.

No I haven't noticed. I know my brake light switch is bad b/c my brake lights stay on when my foot is not on the pedal. Could this cause a check engine light to come on? O and my ESP light comes on too.

Yes, it will and it causes misfires too. Fix the brake switch.

Really? If that is the case then I will fix it ASAP. I hope the switch is causing the check engine light too!

the brake lights most likely mean you are low on brake fluid and the misfires are coming from the coilpacks.. they need to be replace.. i just got mine back from the dealership...

    Re: Cylinder Misfires

I purchased my B6 a few weeks ago in Orlando and the VAG showed prev misfires on all cylinders. But there were a bunch of other codes too, and it appears that a lot of the codes were due to a low battery, which was replaced a couple days before I got the car, or to the dealer pressure-washing the engine. When you get access to a VAG-COM (and after you fix the brake switch etc), clear the codes and see what comes back. I have a VAG-COM, so if you're near WPB anytime, LMK.

Why is getting misfire codes all the time not a big deal? I would be quite concerned.

    Re: Cylinder Misfires

I have been getting them for 2.5 years ever since I had my GTRS if I run more than like 18psi of boost and any timing. And have been through coilpacks, plugs and a maf but they still come every so often. It isnt something I notice, it is just the check engine light comes on which is annoying.

The brake light switch is freaking out the ABS/EPS and closing the throttle plate.

    Re: Cylinder Misfires

I just had this happen to me.. thought it was coil packs at first.. changed them all out and finally ended up bringing it to Audi and threw 8 codes. Turns out a Check Valve exploded and had a MAJOR vacuum leak.

reason you dont listen to people who work at autoparts stores. we have coilpacks, not plug wires. and yes...coilpacks seem to die frequently on these cars for some reason. theyre only about $30 at the dealer. depending on your miles...you may need spark plugs too. OEM were made to last 50-60k. i just did mine at 69k and they were the originals. car drives much smoother now.

Well it was close to my house and wanted to see what codes it said b/c I will be busy for the next couple of days. That's why I created this thread to get feedback before I buy or do anything. The car I just bought about 2 months ago and only has 31K on it. It kinda irritates me that I am having problems already at only 31K. Thanks for the feedback.

    Re: Cylinder Misfires

Also been reading that when the car is upgraded (ie-flashed) you should change out the spark plugs and check the coilpacks. Apparently the higher temps that the car produces from the higher boost levels causes the CP and spark plugs to go bad quicker.

    Re: Cylinder Misfires

well i dont know how much of this brake switch causing misfires i believe, but you need to fix that, it will definitly disable esp and abs function and is very easy to replace, misfires on all 4 cylinders, id be suspect of fuel delivery first, check fuel pressure, do a amp draw on the fuel pump make sure its not drawing excessive amperage, next i would check for vacuum leaks, spray some carb spray around the intake manfold with the car running if it starts to stumble or you hear the idle speed raise you have a leak somewhere, if not on any of those fronts, your maf may need to be replaced.

The ESP light came on a few days ago while driving. Read that it is prob the brake light switch b/c my brake lights stay on while driving w/o my foot on the pedal and....the CEL came on yesterday. So I figured it was the brake light switch causing the CEL, but from reading other threads and from what you guys are saying it is something else. I am getting it VAG on Tues. Thank God!

Fixed the brake light switch and the ESP doesn't come on anymore. Changed out the spark plugs and the cleared the check engine light and hasn't come back on yet!
