only 164 miles...Check Engine light came on!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,

Could someone please tell me what might have gone wrong? I was driving and all of a sudden 'check engine' light came on... I took delivery of this car 2 wks ago and now it only has 164 miles...

I would hate wasting my time to take it to the dealer unless I have to... If someone has had this happened or might know what is going on, please let me know.

My car is 08 S4, Manual transmission...and I have been driving under 4k rpm.

    Thank you...

Your car is obviously upset with you only driving it 164 miles in TWO WEEKS! I'm surprised it even started for you. Just kidding, take it to the dear ASAP...could be nothing but that's the only way to know. And drive that car!

    Update: The light has disappeared...

I hope it's not because I pressed any button accidentally to reset it. Only dealer knows how to reset it, correct?

    Thank you.

Had the same symptoms, here's what it could be:

    a. intake manifold runner issue
    b. ECU software needs an update to 0090 or something

Thanks... Is intake manifold a big issue?is it ok to wait until 1000 miles and get it checked/updated when I do my first oil change? I simply don't want to waste time at the dealer...

Did you forget to take it in for the 160mi service?? LOL

Seriously: I'd take it in to the dealer anyways, and have them scan the codes.

I wouldn't wait. The sooner you get it cleared up the better...then you'll have time to fight when audi voids your warrantee for not driving the car enough...I kid I kid...

Re: only 164 miles...Check Engine light came on!

My guess is...there was a CEL before you bought it, and they cleared the code right before you picked it up. It usually takes about 150 miles for the same CEL to come back on after clearing it.

You got hosed, as they seem to be hiding something.

What is '150 miles' based of? Thanks.

There will DEFINITELY be an AZ member in Seattle that will VAG your car for you. Post here and/or regional forum. Then call the dealer to make an appointment. You'll want to know what that code is before they look at it. But DON'T clear it. Just scan so you'll know they aren't feeding you bullsh!t.

Hey John, you actually don't even need a vag tool to scan. Your local auto shop should be able to do it with an OBD tool for free. I know that autozone and Kragen does it for free. Check them out first

It just takes a while for the CEL to be triggered. Back when I had my cats replaced with test pipes I would get a CEL based on 02 sensors. I would clear it, and it would come back around 150 miles. Your ECU takes xxx amount of miles for the it read as "ready", which is why many states use a readiness test when they hook your car up. That way you can't just clear the codes and go get a sticker, it won't read it as ready.

I think the VAG is a better idea.

The OBD tool will only show basic info on the CEL. Might be enough to give you an idea what is wrong though.... And maybe thats all you need before taking it to the dealer

Thank you all for the replies and personal experience. I just went to Autozone. They plugged it in and it says Linking Error... the gentleman told me 'your car's too new for our machine'...

I'll try local audi owner and see if anyone can help me, thank you.

It just registers itself as a 'sporadic' problem in the ECU's CEL logs. When is it due in for a service? If it's soon, let them know that the CEL's come up and have them either clean, align or replace the faulty runner. Chances are that they will check your ECU software version first, update it, and tell you go back the last time.

Since I live 5 minutes from the dealer, I usually don't hesitate to bring the car in when I have any problem -- that's what the warranty is for -- and if I get any lip from the technicians, I just make it clear that I want it in writing that I am completely indemnified should any problems occur while they tell me that it's nothing major and to come around in a couple thousand more miles. That usually gets them working to fix the problem rather than to procrastinate.
