AEB-VR6 Throttle body swap

I recently got some throttle codes and went into limp mode, which was nice for gas mileage, but not so great for fun factor.

so i decided to upgrade instead of just replace.

i contacted 034 and ordered the adapter plate and VR6 OBD2 throttle body.





i was planning on it being a direct bolt on, buuuuuuuuuuut . . .

the adapter cocks the TB 45 degrees, and the bottom bolt hits the ear on the intake manifold for the support bracket.

so i went the hard(right) way and used some MB trans pan aluminum bolts(ones for the new magnesium pans) and cut em off and re drilled new holes and milled the center bore per the gasket.

i bent the cable bracket a little towards the TB and removed the plastic holder for cyl 1 & 2 injector connectors and ran the cable through that spot.

here is where i can't decide what to do.

the OEM AEB throttle doesnt use the two large vacuum ports that the VR6 has.

anyone know of an aesthetic way to block them off, or something i could use them for?

right now i have a length of hose looped between the two, tucked under the manifold.

i must say, the guys at 034 were, as usual, very helpful. the whole transaction was carried out leisurely on AZ pm's. the adapter, hardware and gaskets were all top notch.

You could weld them shut? or get some vacuum caps.

Those are not vacuum ports. They are just the inlet/outlet of a U for running coolant thru the TB housing.

You mean liquid heated. It would be hard to cool the TB with coolant seeing that once the engine is at running temps the coolant is going to be hotter then the TB or the air flowing thru it.


Basically it was designed in the same way the oil/coolant heat exchanger, allowing the coolant to get the oil up to temp quicker.

They are vaccuum ports.That is an OBD-II 2.8 V6 throttle body MIke,not OBD-1 VR6 like yours...

If anyone wants a conversion kit let me know.We have 10 brand new 2.8 V6 throttle bodies in stock @ $225US each

Wow that is weird, seeing that the ports look exactly the same. oh well seems I learned something new today. Just an odd place to put vacuum ports.

Well I guess all he had to do was blow thru the port and see where the air came out.


To block them off all he needs to do is visit an autoparts store like Kragen and buy some vacuum covers, just make sure to clamp them down good since they will get boost pressure.

Gains are most likely going to depend on how much air flow you are trying to force thru the TB, so the higher the hp you are making the more gains you will see.

but off idle throttle and part throttle driving are much easier now.

and i havent found any caps big enough for a clamp to fit on.

There is a power gain to be had....I would wager 4-6whp at least.If you look @ the SIZE of the AEB throttle plate you would laugh.The DBW models come with a larger throttle body but most people dot mention that.

Regardless the 2.8 V6 throttle body has a 65mm throttle plate.More than enough!

S4's have a DBW throttle body.
The V6 and VR6 DBC throttle bodies have different vaccuum breather ports.
Check your pm.

Have you guys done anything with porting stock AEB intakes? I'm messing with a spare one I have around. There's a handful of places that need some attention inside of that thing. I should be bolting it up tonight, I'll see if it makes a difference.

It all depends on what your car is. If your a DBC then your tb will be from the 12v vr6 wich is dbc, if your dbw then it will come from a 24v vr6 which is also dbw.

I do not have a VR6 throttle body. I do have a stock AEB nDBW Throttlw body with about 5mins worth of porting done by yours truly.

Depends on the year of the VR6.
You need an OBD-II Throttle body from the VR6.

I wish but not by a long shot.One of the biggest advantages of DBW is the ability to go Mafless and as large as an 80mm DBW throttle body for peanuts.With DBC you are pretty much stuck @ 65mm unless you go standalone (which most will not do.).

He is actually right.SOme of the OBDII throttle bodies do have coolant feed and return lines as they sat over a hot exhaust manifold on the VR6.The idea was to stop the throttle body for heating up and "shutting".
