Not many people are going to recommend springs for you because the common thinking around here is that lowering springs are going to blow out your shocks very quickly. However, there are a few guys (small minority) that say you won't really have a problem. From what I have read on these boards, no one has listed any proof to support their claims...
With that said, I suggest getting coilovers. Why? Because for a couple hundred dollars more, you will have the adjustability to finely tune your ride height as well as adjust the dampening (most coilovers are adjustable). Furthermore, you will experience far better handling than you could ever imagine with stock shocks. The final reason, which swayed me to purchase coilovers over springs is that if it is really true that you will blow out your shocks installing lowering springs, you will end up paying more in the end because you will pay for the springs now, pay to install them, pay for new shocks when they blow out, and pay for installation again (sorry for the run on sentence). The only negative aspect about coilovers is that they require maintenance. From what I understand, every couple of months you need to grease them up.
With all that said, I recommend picking up a set of FK Konigsports and they can be found for $1000 at
www.ngpracing.com. You might have to call them because I don't see them on their website. The Konigsports coupled with a RS4 rear sway bar will give you insane handling and ride quality very similar to the stock sport suspension. You can seriously point the nose pretty much anywhere and the car will follow. Hopefully this will help you and others make your decision about what is right for your car. Obviously I am very biased because I have coilovers, but it would be interesting to hear about the ride quality and handling characteristics from the guys who bought just springs. Anyone?
